adding a rx 6400

Hello.

I have a little optiplex 7050. i7 with 16 gigs of ram also a mvme. So I got myself a low profile rx 6400 so I could turn it into a light gaming machine for the kid.

I assumed I would be able to just drop it in and it should work. When it is in the machine seems to stop early in its boot sequence. Before it start loading up the OS. If I hit f11 f12 I get a little message at the top right of the screen "preparing one time boot.... something or other" and stop there. Please note. I can only see this if the HDMI is plugged into the onboard output. Not the rx 6400. It just give a blank screen on the card.

Now I know the card works because I put it in my rig to test. No problems.

I updated the bios and all the drivers. Sooooo ya, Any thoughts?

@mattpal Hi, sorry if I miss understood you but it looks like your Sff with PSU 180w works great with Radeon 6400 lp?

"But, after following the above advice everything is fine!

My secure boot was already turned off, but legacy options was not enabled.

The solution for me was to reset the bios to default ( I have the latest installed), and then turn off secure boot and enable legacy options.

I cannot imagine why this should make any difference, but it does!"

Looks like it works fine.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the tip! Secure boot off, legacy on and I got 6400 low profile working on 7050 SFF i7.

By the way the GPU heatsink seemed pretty hot when (never) booting. But after the issue was resolved and the OS loaded it is a lot cooler. Now I would not even say it's hot. Just warm.

BTW I have a 180W PSU. Have not fully loaded the GPU yet... we'll see.

Cheers

No guarantees with a 53w card on a 180 PSU, but it's also been said Dell might understate their PSU's.

@revelationsr

I stumbled upon this post while dealing with the same issue of the BIOS setup and boot sequence getting stuck after installing an XFX SWFT 105 Radeon RX 6400 into a Dell Optiplex 7050 SFF desktop PC. Disabling Secure Boot and enabling Legacy Options ROMS did the trick. I was almost giving up and considering a less capable graphics card, but your post saved me from that hassle. Thank you so much!

@bradthetechnut Hey man I need some help

I also have a similar problem, I recently buy a swft rx6400 and I put in my dell optiplex 5050 sff but I doesnt show image on my screen.

I have a

CPU: i7 7700

The power supply is 180w ( I thought this one the problem but people told me the 180w its good it should run the GPU)

I dont know what can i do should I upgrade the power supply? if so can someone recommend me a good power supply for my pc, but if this is not the problem what else can I do?

@Angelo_20256  Did you already try Secure Boot off in BIOS and Legacy Options ROMs on?

Also, replace/test the size 2032 CMOS battery.  Bad batteries affect BIOS and therefore PC operation.  The 7050 was introduced in 2017 and 5 years is the typical lifespan of the battery.

Hello,

didn't know there were so many Optiplex SFF users that are planning to transform theirs into a gaming machine - and then use this graphics card too!

I'll receive my RX 6400 LP on Monday.

Thank you all for your valuable infos and your help so far! I have some questions though:

* For those of you with 7050 and i7: Dou you have the 7700 or the K version? Does K run on the original mainboard at all? I know there's no OC but is it compatible at all? I have an i5 7500 installed but am looking for a CPU upgrade (240W PSU).

* Legacy BIOS/UEFI/Secure Boot : Is this normal that the machine won't boot with a GPU or only when this model is installed??

* Which OS are you using? Can you install Win 11 without Secure Boot and Legacy BIOS anyway? I am planning to install ChimeraOS, Nobara or Bazzite. Has anyone success installing them (due to drivers...) or some experience with these gaming OSes?

* Does anyone have additional fans or venting holes etc.?

Thank you in advance for your help and for sharing your experience! Looking forward to your messages!

Update:

The system won't boot up when drivers aren't installed. Should have been clear. In the meanwhile I have replaced the Optiplex 7050 SFF with a Presicion 3431 SFF (i5-9500 and transferred all the other components)

I have Windows 11 on the 1 TB m.2 and Bazzite on the 240GB SATA SSD for testing. Which OS would be the better option when I want to game on the couch via controller (and not want to care for updates)?

@mattpal Hello friend, how are you? I'm in the same situation you reported, I have an optiplex 7050 with a 180w power supply, I bought an rx 6400 and it's not working, did yours work without changing the power supply?

As I posted in another RX 6400 thread:  Good to know a PSU upgrade is needed. Seems to be hit or miss on whether a 180w will power an RX 6400 or not. One user I know of pushes 75w cards on the 180w PSU and claims it works. It may depend on CPU wattage.

@heavyrock1989 Look in the Bios and try to change the display from the Mobo to the Rx6400 I don't remember each step because I didn't do it a long time but I do remember I did this if it doesn't work you probably might need a bigger PSU ( power supply)

Hi, I managed to solve it, I activated legacy mode in the bios and it worked perfectly with my source.
