Dell Optiplex 3010 RAM upgrade?

I have a Dell opiplex 3010 with  1050Ti 1tb SSD 8gb ram and an I5 3450
I know 16gb will work fine but I don't know WHICH ram will be compatible

I was wondering if this ram will work

Per Dell's documentation max supported is 8GB, however it's not clarified that if it's limited by chipset or firmware.

Anyway that Core i5 3rd Gen will Bottleneck the memory so there is no point adding more

However Your machine Your rules.

You can try adding 2 sticks of 8GB each for dual channel support.

Well I usually use 7.5% of the ram playing video games or trying to record the CPU is is at 70% most of the time under heavy loads for the 1050ti standards, sometimes lower. Upgrading the CPU is another option I'm pretty sure an I7 3770 would work just fine but I dont think it will add to much.

Will the bottleneck dramatically impact performance? I thought 3rd gen I5 supported up to 32gb of ram?

@Mattrix6306  Bottleneck doesn't mean that REDCUED performance. When one component's limitation is prevent  other to under to use it's 100% capability.

What kind of load can you put on this Core i5 3rd Gen CPU which will utilize 16GB of RAM

You can make more sensible investments like your GTX 1050, an SSD

as these components can be carried over to your next computer.

I would suggest not to invest a single penny to upgrade this old machine. It can be more than 6 years old. So if it dies that purchased RAM is useless for any computer coming in 2021

I doubt one would notice the difference between a 3.1GHz and a 3.4GHz CPU.  I5-3450 is top listed CPU.  I don't know if users tried the I7-3770 in a 3010.

As for the RAM, a performance increase is noticed from 4GB to 8GB, but hardly beyond that unless using RAM heavy apps.  Some people have put 16GB RAM in their 3010's though top listed is 8GB.  That generation of Optiplex's does seem to have. a reputation for being able to exceed RAM specs.  32GB is not an option.

You'll definitely notice the difference if you go from an HDD to an SSD.  Some people have programs on SSD's and storage on HDD's.  Files should still always be backed up outside of PC.

I just wanna make sure upgrading the ram would be worth it but maybe not

also the I7 3770 has 8 threads instead of 4 so I think it will help with performance but i don't think I will be doing that either

thanks for the info I appreciate it

Cores are more important than threads. Cores control the hardware and applications. This web page might help.

  • 64 bit systems will almost always support 8gb per slot.
  • I’d recommend going to the Dell website and installing the latest bios update first.

Can I ask, what RAM you ended up going with? I currently can't afford a new PC, and I have an;

Optiplex 3010 i7-3770, with 8GB RAM. Also, a 1050ti was shoved into it, with a 1TB SSD.

I also do stream on Twitch, which I have limited what effects I use.

I have two kingston DIMMS 8 GB of ram, making a total of 16 GB of ram, runs well, for streaming you have a good machine.

@XPS_Man  It's a very usable machine, even here in 2024 with the proper ram, ssd, and video card. I'm picking one up (Hopefully) May 1st with the 240ssd and 8 gbs already installed. I have 16 gbs of DD3 sitting in ther drawer. Have access to 32gb...

I think everyone judges a computer by GAMING PERFORMANCE. I'm not a gamer...BOOM!

BTW, the machine with all the cables is 25 bux...BOOM!

@Mattrix6306 Hope you kept this machines, if for nothing else than repurposing wiht a Linux Distro. The answer you got from XPS is "Gamer Bois" talk. This machine is quite capable of video editing and rendering. Especially since It's already paid for.

Computer "snobs" are like gun snobs...."nuff said.

@XPS_Man  You sound like "The Computer Guys" from the 1990s....Never was the software. It always required more and more "Hardware".  Thing is, we were running 4 instances of full color/30 fps video surveillance on an XT with 256k of ram and a 10gb hard drive...OS?. CP/M. Too bad Exxon never sold it to anyone.

This machine is quite capable even in 2024 with say....I dunno'.....LINUX MINT!.
