Dell Optiplex 390 MT - Zotac GTX 770 4GB GPU Upgrade

Hi,

I was wondering if this GPU would fit within the case of the Dell Optiplex 390. I know it’s not a great GPU but it should be sufficient for what I want to do. Do you think it would fit?

Google the specs or dimensions on the GTX 770.  Measure inside the 390.  As for length, I think the 390 has about 10"-12" to work with.

A big catch is one would have to forget about using the 230w GTX 770 with the stock PSU.

Zotac recommends a 600w minimum PSU.  EVGA BR 700w PSU is a good one.

Also, Google the bottleneck, for example: "I5-2500 GTX 770 bottleneck"  Then choose the option that's PC Builds.  "I5-2500" is just an example, use whatever your CPU is.

My 7010 with 3770K and windows 11 does not seem to have any bottleneck. Core I5 is also fine.

However GPU's worth anything require better power supply.

EVGA 700BR, and SSD is helpful for booting.  Steam Library should still go onto hard drive.  The other gotcha is the sandy bridge sata problem meaning you can only use 2 onboard sata ports. The other 2 will fry you expensive ssd with over voltage on the sata ports.

ZOTAC 770 is NOT fitting in the case.

Works fine when you get a corsair riser cable and upgrade PSU to EVGA 700BR

12 inches is a full length 3 fan video card. NOT WORKING without hacking case or using pci-e riser cable.

"10"-12" to work with."  BZZZT thats totally wrong.

390 790 990 3010 7010 9010 3020 7020 9020 all use the 8.5 inch max case where hard drives get in the way of the card slot.  You can use a riser cable or tin snips to cut that part out and mount the hdd elsewere in the case. The other way around this "ISSUE" is to move the board to a non dell case.

The fans for example can use an adapter as can the front panel , audio, usb etc.

Would an EVGA 500BR work for an MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr iii? Also, would this GPU even fit in the case?

Yes & no.  500w PSU would be fine, but the GTX is 9.3" long.

I have taken measurements and I am highly confident that the GPU will fit.

That's fine.  I was going off of what speedstep said that there's only 8.5" to work with.  That almost sounds like the smaller, newer towers.  My 7010 (same chassis as 390) isn't in a convenient place to just open it up and measure.

"The other gotcha is the sandy bridge sata problem meaning you can only use 2 onboard sata ports. The other 2 will fry you expensive ssd with over voltage on the sata ports."

Then I think it should be specified which SATA ports to use.  Is it the bottom 2?  I haven't heard of the 390 SATA ports frying anything in this forum yet.  By any chance is there a reference, like a Dell Community thread?

Optiplex 390 Tech Guide says 7.4".  So what's your actual measurement?

Some longer cards do fit but not when they interfere with the front usb connector and the power plugs into the back of the card instead of the top.

One card in this range is

Evga 01G-P3-1554-KR GTX 550 TI

With Longer cards you use Corsair 300mm Riser cable it will work but it wont fit INSIDE the case.

Outside the case works fine for both power supply and Video card for Desktop and SFF.

12 INCHES is a no go because thats the full length of the case.  You can take a plastic ruler and check for yourself with the side cover off.

8.5 inches is based on a card that long with the AUX PCI-E power going into the back side of the card.  You need room to clear the ram slots as well as the Front USB connector and a few other things.

EVGA models from the 500B to 700BR have worked for many.  The 275W psu is too small if you are going to add 225W to 300W GPU that uses 75W from the slot and 150W from the six pin.

390 chassis dimensions:

Dimensions (H x W x D) Inches/(cm) 14.2 x 6.9 x 16.4 / (36.0 x 17.5 x 41.7)

But please remember speedstep is right about not running into the RAM.  The 75w slot is often not in the best place.

The maximum TDP of the GTX 660 I was thinking of getting is 140W, I'm assuming a EVGA 500BR would work?
