Does an Optiplex 3040 support i7-6700 CPU?
I know the official specification does not show the i7-6700 CPU as an option, but will the Optiplex 3040 support this CPU?
I've seen someone claim that he bought an Optiplex 3040 with an i7-6700.
Can this be done?
The Intel chipset does seem to support it, but does the BIOS have the microcode built in to accept this CPU?
Has anyone tried it in the past?

yes it supports. Dell does not offer it because 3040 is entry level low tier compared to 7040. in general dell does not offer high end configuration for low tier model.

Users have validated 6700k in 3040. Various 3040 bios date listed in https://www.userbenchmark.com/PCBuilder?searchTerm=Optiplex%203040%206700k
The thermal design power (TDP for short) of the Intel Core i7-6700 is 65 W, while the Intel Core i7-6700K has a TDP of 91 W. The Dell oem stock heatsink with a aluminum cold plate is designed for 65W cpu only and not adequate to cool 6700k at 4.0 GHz base frequency. Note that neither the chipset nor bios support CPU overclock.

If you have a minitower 3040, heatsink can be upgraded relatively easily.
if you have a SFF it would be more tricky.

Hi, I'm thinking along the same lines in upgrading the processor on a 3040 but wondered whether the Bios would support the 6700K specificaly and whether the cooling fan would cope with the extra heat generated?
