New Optiplex Micro 7010 gets quite *hot*, fan spinning even when idle.

OptiPlex Micro 7010

Hello,

just got a new Optiplex Micro 7010, with the midrange i5-13500T cpu.

Compared to the other Optiplex Micro I own (i have several) this one gets quite hot. Even just staying idle, in the BIOS settings page, the others are barely above room temperature, this one gets *hot* and the fan is spinning and annoyingly adjusting all the time.

I installed a Linux distribution (SLES), the same I have on the other Optiplex, and while it sits idling at around 40C, with the fan quite hearable, even just a single Google Meet call, which I normally do without any issue on a 6 cores i5 3070 micro, was enough to bring all the cores to the 80C neighborhood, and the fan screaming. Haven't even tried with some actual full load.

I have about a dozen optiplex micros, of various generations, and while some do get warm under load, none gets nearly this warm for a small-ish amount of work, or at idle.

Is the 7010 micro thermal management seriously underpowered in general or there's something with my copy? The Dell diagnostics end all the tests with success.

I also have a SFF 7010, with the I5-13500, which is totally silent (okay, it's much bigger, still....)

The comparison was to point out the differences of CPUs used in the micro systems.  That would only explained the reason for higher than average temps comparing to previous models, a factor for you to take into consideration.  But it wasn't accounted for the rest of described unusual fan surges and the thermal fluctuation could be triggered by something else.

Dell Optimizer has thermal control options which may calm the fan down a bit.  But it won't work with Linux.  Open up a new machine to check condition of thermal paste doesn't seem right neither.  Only you can decide what is acceptable for you and taking appropriate action to get it resolve.  Especially, if you just get this machine recently and having option to return/exchange for a proper functioning system.

I think the new 7010 micro gets hot by design.  Being installed in the same micro form factor, lacking space for air-cooled thermal, it's packed with a quite higher heat produced new processor.  For comparison, lets take a look at some technical specs from the i5-9400t (3070) and i5-13500t (new 7010) to see the differences.

i5-9400t:  6 cores, 3.40 GHz (max turbo), 35w (TDP)

i5-13500t:  14 cores, 4.60 GHz (max turbo), 35w base, 92w turbo (TDP)

PCG 2020D thermal solution was suppose to be used in place of PCG 2015A (35w)

Just my own observation, not speaking for Dell.

What surprises me is not that it gets hot under high load, but rather that it's already struggling with keeping it cool at a modest-to-none load, to the point that's annoyingly whirring (and what's worse, it keeps changing speed) with just the idle desktop and negligible cpu occupancy.

Had to give up, asked for a return and got a SFF.
Always loved the micro form factor, but for the environment I am using it, the variable noise was way too annoying.

Thanks for helping!

Got my SFF plus with the 65W "base" i5-13500, I am comparing it with the same OS (actually, the same SSD) as the micro.

While it can get noisy under load and the reported temps can rise in the 90s, when idle it sits at, or just a couple degrees above, room temp.

Just curious at this point if I got a lemon. Unfortunately I couldn't afford the time (and didn't want the hassle on Dell's side) to try a replacement micro before finally switching to the SFF.

Anyone using a 7010 micro (2023 version, yeah reusing names) with Linux?

OptiPlex Micro Plus 7010 supported operating systems:

  • Windows 11 Home, 64-bit
  • Windows 11 Pro, 64-bit
  • Windows 11 Pro Downgrade (Windows 10 image)
  • Windows 11 Pro National Education, 64-bit
  • Windows 11 CMIT Government Edition, 64-bit (China only)
  • Ubuntu Linux 22.04, 64-bit
  • Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit

I am aware that Ubuntu 22.04 is officially supported. I am also aware that neither that version of Ubuntu, nor the SLES I am using, have proper support for CPUs with hybrid P/E cores and EHFI.
