OpitPlex 3020M Cpu upgrade

is a intel core I7 4790 compatible with OptiPlex 3020m

edit: if not could someone show me CPUs that are compatible with OptiPlex 3020m

because I have a core i7 intel 4790 and it the CPU downclocks it self when running anything I've been through everything else so its maybe because its not compatible.

you can install i7-4790 in 3020 Micro but Dell has designed and validated only low power 35W Intel 4th gen cpu for Micro due to poor chassis air flow/cooling capability.

when you install a 65W cpu there is a chance of overheating because the Micro cooler and chassis air flow are inadequate to handle the heat load.  you may or might hear loud cpu fan all the time and in the worse case PC may shut down or throttle if cpu overheats.

3020 Micro bios does not block the 65W cpu.  It is the practical cooling limitation of micro case that limits use of 65 w cpu such as i7-4790 in Micro.

i5-4570T has the best base frequency.  otoh it has only 2 cores.  a 4 core cpu is recommended for gaming.  i7-4785T might be a better choice although it has lower base frequency.

there is no PCIe slot to add a discrete graphics card in micro.  without a discrete card gaming is done based on integrated graphics (Intel HD graphics 4600) of 4570T.

this is a list of playable games using HD graphics 4600.

Hello. I know it's an old thread. But if anyone else has this problem and still wants to use a Optiplex 3020 in 2025...
Using the info found on the internet (I remember I saw other post on Dell community as well, check this link from there, cause it's a H81 chipset https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_%28chipsets%29/H81.html), I have upgraded my 3020 to i7 4790S and 16 GB RAM. I had the opportunity to buy the 4790K, but I wasn't sure it will work (also didn't have money for a new cooler), so I got the 4790S. The 4790S can work very well with the stock cooler that came with the i3 when I bought the PC, it's just a little noisy sometimes. Since I have a 290W power supply, I even dared to put a GT 1030 on it. My 3020 works at the moment with 2 SSD's, one 7200 RPM HDD, a GT 1030, the i7 4790 and 16 GB RAM. No problems. I removed the DVDRW, since I rarely use it and the mainboard has just three SATA connectors. Just make sure you upgrade it to the latest BIOS (UEFi actually) to support the CPU. That's it. Have fun!
