Optiplex 3050 Dual Monitors
I have just purchase a Optiplex 3050 and two Dell P2314H Monitors.
I have one successfully connected:
Optiplex 3050 DP out port ---> DP to DP cable --> E2314H #1 DP in port
The second one does not work:
Optiplex 3050 HDMI out port --> HDMI to DP --> E2314H #2 DP in port
Having looked at other posts I found one

This says that the second needs to be:
Optiplex 3050 HDMI out port --> HDMI to VGA cable --> E2314H #2 VGA in port
but also says that it "cannot upconvert to a monitor DP in port unless you purchase an active converter"...
Can anyone tell me what this "active converter" is and how I would get one and use it please.

thank you for the interesting question. "active" adapter, that’s the magic word you need to look for when getting an adapter to go from HDMI TO DP.

HDMI is a clock-less video format, DP uses a clock to keep video in sync. a DP receiving device needs to see a clock on the incoming video, whereas an HDMI receiving device doesn't need it.
When going from HDMI to DP, the DP receiving device is looking for a clock; HDMI sender does not have one, so this does not work. You need an “active” adapter in this case and all that adapter does is add a clock to the video format and sends it out via DP.

So, with that, is there any real advantage using the HMDI - DP or would HMDI - VGA be ok for most things?
I don't Game any anything like that.

VGA is ok for most basic video display. your monitor is 1080p and has VGA port which supports spec resolution.
VGA is the oldest of the connection. It’s been around for decades, dating back to the days of thick, heavy CRT monitors.
While VGA can technically output to 1,920 x 1,080, the problem is that it’s an analog connection, so as you push the resolution higher you get image degradation as the signal is converted from analog to digital.

Hello,
I have solved, found, the solution.
Power off both monitors, power off the Optiplex (be sure the power is off, most right button on the monitor)
Start the Optiplex 3050 when the power led on the keyboard is on or you see the disk power led flickering,
switch on the power on the monitor and everthing works fine.
I had the same issue with one monitor from Display to HDMI. And in one configuration two monitors Display to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI.
I hope it works for you as well
