Optiplex 3060 MFF error 2000-0711 Thermal trip detected

I have an Optiplex 3060 MFF with i3-8100T at home for private administrative use. It is just out of warranty.

Since a few days it randomly powers off (no Windows shutdown, just boom.. off). When I Power it on again it starts up with a warning: "Dell SupportAssist has detected a a failing component etc."

Error code: 2000-0711

Thermal - Thermal trip detected. (previous Desktop Thermal Failure) Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event.

Using the QR-code I get a page with advice to check the fan and vents and update my BIOS. Unfortunately no details about which component exceeded a thermal threshold.

The fan is running fine, all vents and cpu-cooler fins are clean as new. My BIOS is the latest: 1.9.1.

The weird thing is: until now it only occurred (about 10 times in 3 days) when the system was idling or doing very light tasks. It passed the preboot diagnostic test several times, it passes the short and long SupportAssist tests. I can let it run at 100% CPU for an hour using Prime95 and it passed PassMark Burn-in test several times. During these tests I let HWInfo64 monitor the thermal sensors. CPU peaked at 75 °C. The hottest part is the VR VCC that peaked at 83 °C.

Any suggestions about what could be the problem?

It means you have to replace thermal paste, cause is probably dry thermal paste most likely

Thanks, @Centrix8 The last time it crashed the HWInfo log showed the figures below. That doesn't look like there is something wrong with the CPU cooling. But I'll follow your advise anyway and ordered thermal paste. I'll get back here after I let it run an endurance test.

The thermal paste was still in good condition, but I replaced it anyway. Unfortunately, that did not solve the issue. Again I ran several torture tests without any problem, but it switched itself off 3 times when at low CPU usage. Two times after just a few minutes idle, one time after about an hour of playing a slideshow.

Some wild guesses:

  • a faulty sensor
  • there is another Dell-specific sensor that generic HW monitors are not aware of
  • this ePSA (part of the BIOS?) is misinterpreting some sensor data

I'm stuck for the moment

In C:\ProgramData\Dell\ePSA\logs I found files with the name epsa_yyyymmdd_hhmm.log. Some are empty but many contain errors like this:

[00:04:20.277151][ERROR][:77] C:\Users\xyz\source\repos\epsa_fork\cc\src\epsa\util\WmiHelper.cc(77)\epsa.dll!00007FF8D84F3742: (caller: 00007FF8D84DFD3F) Exception(102) tid(15c4) 80041010
[00:04:20.277504][ERROR][:116] C:\Users\xyz\source\repos\epsa_fork\cc\src\epsa\util\WmiHelper.cc(116)\epsa.dll!00007FF8D85670D5: (caller: 00007FF8D84DFD3F) LogHr(102) tid(15c4) 80041010 Msg:[C:\Users\xyz\source\repos\epsa_fork\cc\src\epsa\util\WmiHelper.cc(77)\epsa.dll!00007FF8D84F3742: (caller: 00007FF8D84DFD3F) Exception(102) tid(15c4) 80041010 ]

I replaced the profile name with xyz because it is a name that can be found on LinkedIn as a Dell software engineer. No profile with that name exists on this PC. And "epsa_fork" ????

Edit: and \source\resource\ is folder that does not exist in any profile unless you're developping software in Visual Studio!

I am facing the exact same problem/error with my Optiplex 3070 MFF right now. It has passed all the diagnotic tests but the unit keeps shutting down with Error Code: 2000-0711. The unit is clean (free of dust/lint) and well ventilated. Any suggestions?

Via another forum I got a message from another 3060 MFF owner who also had the same problem. I gave up. My guess that it could be:

  • a Dell-specific chip with sensors that is flaky
  • or the BIOS misinterpreting signals from that chip (or those from the CPU)

It has nothing to do with Windows or a driver. It happened to me once while I had booted a Linux image from USB.

A 3070 could still be under factory warranty.
