Optiplex 7040M Processor Upgrade
Would the stock power supply provided with an Optiplex 7040M with the i5 6500T processor need to be changed if I installed an i5 6500 processor?
In short is there anything preventing me from buying an i5 6500 processor and dropping it in my PC?
Thank you for help in advance.

Single-Core Speed: Crucial for older systems and many modern emulators; higher clock speeds are better.
in this regard i7 6700t is mildly better than i5 6500t

It is the wimpy cooler in micro that can not adequately cool regular desktop cpu i5-6500 or the like that limits practical deployment of the cpu.
it will post but expect cpu fan to be loud more often than you like.
for the same reason micro oem cpu are all low power 35w tdp and do not include 65w regular desktop cpu by default.

Thank you for the reply. So if you don’t mind, let me ask this. I am using the computer to emulate older game consoles. In order to push its capability to its upper limit so we can emulate more and more recent consoles. What course of action would you take? I have already ordered RAM. what processor would you buy for?

@redxps630 thank you for the information. so in your opinion, it wouldn’t really be worth it. I’m going to just stick to improving the ram, then
