Optiplex 740 cpu upgrade
I am tired of the Athlon x2 5000 cpu that my system has. I found an Athlon x4 640 cpu for $8 and I am wondering if it will work in my system with ddr2 1066 memory and the latest bios. I do not have the enhanced edition motherboard.

I am afraid the quad core Athlon will not work in optiplex 740.
user benchmark and 740 spec include only Athlon 64 (single core) and 64x2 (dual core).

Bios should be upgraded BEFORE changing CPU. Otherwise you can have a system that wont even boot. Dell does not support this.
130W processors are not supported 65W or 95W processors must have larger power supply which is why QUADS DO NOT GO INTO USFF most 95W processors require a TOWER 305W or greater power supply.
Changing the CPU is not validated or supported by Dell. Which ones work or are Validated with the latest bios can be found by asking @DELL-Chris M what the Dell part numbers are. Same with the heatsinks. There are REQUIRED copper performance heatsink upgrades so it is NOT possible that the cheap aluminum heatsink is used with 85W+ and up cpus.
Processor might work but its not officially supported.
HD9650WCJ4BGH is an OEM/tray microprocessor.

There is no USFF for the 740.
MT came with large aluminum heatsink more than sufficient for cooling 95w CPU. I had the same heatsink in my 755 with a 95w Q9650. DT also has large heatsink. SFF has aluminum heatsink with copper plate and pipes.
