Optiplex Micro Tower CPU Upgrades
Hi,
I know the question come up with atleast each series/gen but i want to ensure everything is alright here since I may spend money on it.
Can the Dell Optiplex 3070, which f.e. came with i5-9500T (by default), can handle some i7-8700T or i7-9700T without any further adjustments/tweaks? Of course Bios will be up to date at time of upgrade.
The Dell Shop for my region/country simply doesnt offer any i7 option for any Optiplex Micros anymore (3070/5070/7070), so I think about some simple CPU upgrade by myself.
Yes I did that numerous times on other boards, and I know how those mini beast look inside and what would be able to do to replace CPU on those.
The question is if those Optiplex can boot/will work still the same.
I read thru forums and i know that:
- Micro Optiplex with T CPU require surely smaller/normal PSU and have standard fan/heatsink
- Micro Optiplex with non-T/regular CPU require bigger PSU but also do have some other fan/heatsink due CPU having more TDP/getting more warm
- an upgrade from T to a non-T CPU surely doesnt work and is never recommended

Please dont ask why im buying micro tower even requiring more performance, and notSFF or regular tower.

I know that those Micros only run with 35W, and i surely just stay with T- CPUs.
Same is with warranty, CPU upgrade means this is gone.
Even I dont like to share something here, but based on some "teardown" videos, it is atleast physically possible to remove/replace CPU:

Question will stay, if Bios/microcode/Dell system will allow it to boot and make it work.

first off Dell does not sell your PC with all CPU that can work on it, that is a fact, OK>>
there are 2 answers, what works and what dell supports, (2 different things, and clear as day to me)
what really works, is told by 300+ on the bench mark forums, Not by size case or mobo) just H370 -3070
Micro:
- FCLGA1151., socket.(gota fit) I9 ,same.
- Can the PCU do full wattage with the heat sink and its VRM , I9=65watts.. I5 from dell same.
- one i9 uses 127watts of power.9900KS
- can the power supply handle that. well it did on the I5.. but I'd not go over 65watts,
- Will BIOS allow it (upgraded) (your on your own if you can not find others that tired)
- will the CHIP set support it. even all steppings and shinks? Gen 9? seems so.
- and will BIOS clocking rules allow the full performance you want? IDK does anyone, really>?>
- BIOS can also limit cores, seems not (benchmark link shows that)
the STICKY WICKET, is BIOS support that dell does not document (nill) well.
intel sells CPU to anyone on earth that asks, you dont need dell to buy any CPU, ever, even newegg.com sells them OTC, and vast other places, (endless really)
here is intels answer, h370
the h370 is a lower performance Z370 so do not go thinking they are the same..
the BENCHMARK shows that I7-9600T working here. is 35watt TPD CPU, why would it not work.?
really just checkbenchmarks first and if missing brave up, even buy CPU from sellers (TOP) that do exchanges,
then if successful, and yours to the BENCH< so others can benefit.

Micro units typically only support 35W cpu.

Dell only supports what came with the unit when sold.
The other issue may also be that the CPU is not in a socket but rather soldered to the board.
Dont know if it has LGA 1151 socket.
