PC Hangs
Hi
We have problems with one of the relatively newer pcs. The pc just freezes from time to time requiring pulling power cable out to turn off and back on. The pc also stops connecting why Intel vPro, in which case the solution is to remote restart pc using shutdown -m\\pc-name /r from another pc. Since the remote access via Intel vPro also stops it does not seem like a software issue? Logging-in to pc via remote desktop also often brings up a blank black screen.
The pc has all the latest Dell updates including BIOS (v1.21.0). Some key events that might be relevant are given at the end below.
How can the pc be fixed?
Thanks
Regards

Did you ever find a fix for this? I'm noticing a similar issue on a user's machine

I have the same issue with Microsoft-Windows-HAL Event ID: 20 and also 21. I spent over a week with support trying to resolve this with various BIOS, Chipset and other software updates to no avail. FInally Dell sent a tech with a replacement motherboard. Did clean windows 11 install updates to drives like BIOS, chipset, etc. Same error. Now, they want me to do this again without joining to the domain. I will work on it, but I don't see how joining the domain would make these errors. Let me know if any of you resolved yours and how. Thanks.

Having the same issues on a user's machine. Confirmed Dell BIOS is on the latest version.
Did anyone ever find a solution to this?

@jrsac
This one has been a real pain as the computer is in another state, so I only have remote access. So far, I’ve spent hours troubleshooting, diagnosing, with and without Dell.
Before I called Dell, the computer’s performance was unusable so I had one of the staff purchase a USB stick so I could use the Dell OS recovery tool to download a recovery image and instruct the user over the phone on how to wipe the machine clean and then get me reconnected so I could rebuild it.
After that was done, I thought it was over but nope, the user replied a few days later it was acting strange again. I got on the phone with Dell (It’s under pro support plus warranty) to go over the extensive laundry list of things I have done so far thinking that since I can’t reproduce it exactly each time that they would do much but after being put on hold a few times, the tech stated that he saw some reports of users with this model (OptiPlex Micro Plus 7010) complaining about poor performance due to the SSD. He said it looks like it was fixed in a firmware update, but this disk already had its firmware on the newest version (Kioxia-BG5-Solid-State-Drive-Firmware-Update_MVCJ7_WIN64_1120.0109_A04.EXE)
He said they will replace the SSD and if the issue persists, they will replace the motherboard. The disk was replaced two weeks ago (same brand) and after I had to rebuild that machine again, but the user was out of the office the following week so it was barely used. He’s back in starting today and so far, I haven’t heard anything from him but after the first time I rebuilt it, it took a week to start doing it again so I’m not sure we’re in the clear yet.
Never had something like this happened in the almost 20 years I’ve been doing this. It all started with a ticket that came in titled “mouse acting up” so I grabbed it thinking this would be a quick solve and hear I am one month and two rebuilds later still dealing with it.
The issue was that when he would left-click, he was getting the right-click menus appeared but only half the time and it seemed random. I started with having him swap mice out and that did nothing, so I went on to update drivers, firmware and BIOS via Dell Command Update and after that it was not usable, so I did the first wipe and rebuild.
Anyway, good luck and I’ll reply here if it acts up again. FYI I Still see HAL event ID21

@PS83Tech I am still getting HAL 20 and 21 after clean install of Windows just logging in with a local account (before even joining a domain). Still working with Dell on it; now sent in log files. I will update if it ever gets fixed or I find a solution. Dell replaced my motherboard last week but not the SSD.

@jrsac No resolution so far. Dell asked me to send in the PC for repair after I had uploaded some log files they requested. I also am seeing HAL 20 and HAL 21 errors on other Dell Optiplex PCs (7090 micro models, the one I have talked about here is a 7010 micro).

@jrsac Same here. I'm even seeing HAL 20 and 21 errors on my own Dell Latitude, so I'm starting to think it's not related.
After my last post here, the user complained it started happening again. After reviewing everything that has been done, we seem to think the issue can be power related, as that office looses power a few times a month. We have swapped out his surge protector and moved it to a different outlet in the office and so far so good, but only time will tell.

@PS83Tech I have each PC in the office on individual UPS devices to clean the power and provide short coverage in power outages; but I will check them to see if any are getting too old. Thanks for the update.

We were told to do a Windows reset from support assist (BIOS). That failed with an unspecified error. Dell then came and replaced the motherboard. Going to give it a few days to see how it goes. In general it seems best to get a new motherboard and try your luck with that.

Get motherboards replaced by Dell if still under warranty.

thanks!
Replacing the motherboard completely resolved the errors and issues? I have observed multiple computers throwing the HAL error but today was the first time one of the computers ended up in a completely unusable state with strange video output and failed network issues related to windows domain availability.

@MikeWa803 Mike, In my case above, Dell wound up replacing the motherboard and the SSD after I sent it in for repair. This seems to have fixed the issue so far. (Dell had at first had a tech come out to only replace the motherboard and that did not work. I had to ship it in to have them work on it in the Dell repair center). Like you, I see HAL errors on a couple of other desktops (Optiplex Micros bought around the same time). So far on these others, I have not tried to have them worked on; I think at least one is out of warranty.
