Upgrading my Dell optiplex 755
i am looking to do an upgrade on my dads 755 and my specs are :
CPU - Intel Core2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Ram - 4 gb DDR2
I am thinking of upgrading the ram to like 8gb or 16gb and getting an ssd , but im having a hard time figuring out the CPU to get. I am just trying to get the best possible parts that can still run well on it currently to extend its life, I wanted to just get a new computer for my dad but he refused and rather prefers i upgraded it . so im just looking for the best possible upgrades for him . Any help will be appreciated .Thanks

16 gig of ram isn't an option.
Buy an XE2 instead its 10X faster than the 755

Windows 10 can be installed with Generic Key and Activated with the 7 COA KEY.
If you dont want to make media use OEM DVD to install.

So I posted how to upgrade to 10 with 8 gigs cost is about $129
Works fine but I do not recommend this but I understand a parent or grandparent not wanting to change.
So I setup my Grandma with Optiplex GX620 from 2006 and put basic GT1030 GPU in it and installed windows 10 and Office 2016 and made it auto login with no password using the Microsoft Sysinternals Suite Autologon64.exe
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sysinternals-suite
After install and all updates I cloned the drive to an identical drive and told her if she had any issues to call me and I would come over and fix it.
Did the same thing for my parents.
However they are all gone now so its moot.

Last version of Office is 2010 that runs well on that legacy hardware.
Last version you can install without going online is 2016 which is no longer sold.
They are doing everything they can to force you to go online and use a microsoft account.
The 755 will run windows 10 and will work with 8 gigs of ram.

But your money would be better spent on a newer model that supports current ram and hardware as well as coming with windows 10 drivers.
Then Get 8 gigs ram

WIN10 Home License and DVD is $109

If the DVD doesnt seem to be F12 booting check the region code setting and set it to Region 1 for USA
There are no 10 drivers but the vista and 7 drivers work just fine.
The newer versions of the drivers work with all windows.

Better putting money into a new/newer PC than trying to prolong an old obsolete technology machine. Whatever you do to it, its still an "old" technology and limited to the Intel chipset specs. The 755 is a 2008 era machine.
Some refurbished 4 digit model number Optiplexes can be bought for under $200 (check Amazon) and even have Windows 10 installed.

Thanks for the responses, I want to buy a new computer for him but he refuses because all he does with it is use Microsoft office and check mails at times. That’s why I am thinking of upgrading it for him.

Hey I got the 8 gib ram and installed it, when I check in the bios it recognizes all 8 gb of the ram and says the memory channel mode is dual symmetric . Then when I try booting to windows it freezes and has static lines on the screen . I will add an Imgur link so you can see the issues. I also realized when I remove a ram stick it boots into windows alright . Please help me , every reply is appreciated. https://imgur.com/a/Lhu1lfH

@cryptic Which Windows version is running on the PC and, more importantly, is it 32 or 64?
Also, when you can boot into Windows, do you still have problems with the screen?
If you swap the stick of memory that you have removed with one of the other ones, will the PC still boot?

I am using windows 10 64 bit . And I figured out the problem was with a ram stick. When it’s in any of the slots it either doesn’t turn on or freezes on the windows logo . So I will get a replacement , the only problem I have is the ram is meant to be 800mhz but it reads 667mhz, doesn’t the 755 support 800mhz ram and my bios version is A22(the latest)

I answered here: https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/Optiplex-755-ram-issues/m-p/7929614#M51980
Also, there's been problems in this forum with KVR (Kingston Value RAM). It works for some in Dell's, but not for everybody.
