Dell poweredge T430 power problems

Hello,

We're a small shop and have an out-of-warranty Dual CPU Dell T430 which is acting erratic. It was put on the shelf in February because of power problems. We need it now because another server died, and dusted it off and plugged it in and it worked beautifully. Reinstalled the operating system, got some drives in it, ran it through its paces and no problems at all. Multiple memory tests, passmark tests, prime95 tests, all performed flawlessly.

This morning, with no changes from yesterday, it's dead again.

The system refuses to power on with "VLT0204 System Board Voltages is Outside of Range". I've tried everything suggested. Even have different PSUs from a different poweredge (Same wattage, came with OVKDD2 and tried OGRTNK which were both options for this) and same issue. Reseated the PIB, disconnected and reconnected everything. Waited 10 seconds, did the power-button drain thing multiple times. Power supply LEDs all green. Tried disconnecting all drives, even the backplane. Removed the perc card.

What could be causing this inconsistency? It's clearly not the power supply. I don't have any other PIBs to swap out. Why would it work perfectly fine yesterday with heavy testing and just refuse to do anything today?

Checking the +12V voltage while it's not powered on shows 12.00V exactly. I don't know what else to check.

The system bios was updated to the latest recently. The power supply bios was just updated last night, but it powered on fine after that. Since I've tried other PSUs as well, doubt that's the problem.

Hello,

With that error, the only resolutions I've found are either 1) Update the BIOS (which you already did) 2) Update the iDRAC 3) Drain flea power (only works when we're talking about a one-off situation) or 4) replacing the motherboard.

Testing an alternate PIB would be worth trying, if you had one available, but I believe all that board does is provide the breakout for the PSU. I wouldn't expect the problem to be sourcing from the PIB, though I wouldn't call it impossible. Based on your post, I'd expect that the issue is likely on the board someplace and the best recommendation I could make would be to try flashing the firmware on the iDRAC. If that doesn't change the behavior though, I could really only suggest replacing the board, unfortunately.

Updating iDRAC now via the iDRAC interface, it was 2.70 and 2.80 is available. Bios is updated already for the system board and power supply.

Looking at that log, it seems like there are issues powering the CPUs. VCORE refers to the primary core voltage running to the procs, so the system may be refusing to post to protect your CPUs. If you can test these procs in another system, I'd do so, but this definitely looks like a board replacement, to me.
