PowerEdge T620 displayed fan speed 0%

Hi,

Since I have installed front fan assembly in my T620 the back fans are showing 0%, but the fans are actually spinning around 1000 RPM.

When running on a higher RPM percentage is displayed properly

Is this a bug, if yes, is there any way to fix it?

 Thanks,

I will definitely try this, but at the moment I can only reach the server remotely.

What I have tested yesterday, is to set the fan speed manually through ipmi and the lowest RPM it could get is at around 10% speed and 960 RPM. Setting the percentage lower resulted in the same RPM. So my guess here is that by introducing the front fan assembly the back panel fans are spinning below 10% and iDRAC gets confused about the speed in percentage so it defaults to 0%. That would explain why on boot time the fans all show proper percentage, as those speeds are definitely above the 10% threshold.

This is of course just my theory, but anyways, seeing 0% speed is kind of annoying

Hi Chris,

I have tried what you suggested, removing the front fan while server runs.

If I do it the back fans spin up and the server gives an error about fan redundancy

When adding back everything returns to the previous state, front fans on 15% and back fans on 0%

Hope this helps.

Szaboistvan007,

I would start with reseating the fan connections, as well as making sure the server is up to date on BIOS, iDrac, and controller. The reason being is that the iDrac is what controls the fans, so when an issue arises with the fans, making sure it is current and up to date is necessary.

Let me know what you see.

Hi Chris,

Fans were reseated a couple of times, but on their idle speed (around 1000 RPM) the percentage of the rotation is 0 %

Also I just recently checked the firmware updates, everything is up to date.

So just to clarify, at the server boot, when the rotation of the fans is faster, these 2 back fans also properly show the percentage.

However when the OS boots and RPM lowers the percentage is set to 0 %

Szaboistvan007,

I believe what you're seeing is due to the fact the front/center fans are optional and that once the OS starts the system is trying to determine if the optional fans are required. I am going to research what you are seeing, but one thing I would like to confirm is if the "added" front fans, when removed, cause the server to generate an error or run normally.

Let me know what you see.

Hi,

it seems that they spin with to low RPM so that's why you got no percentage show.
