PowerEdge T640 : Fan Ext R

Hello,

We have a PowerEdge T640 with a fan blowing full speed all the time because of a cooling alert on sensor "Fan Ext R" saying it's running a 0RPM

The thing is there's nothing plugged on those pins and there's no external fan at all

All 6 internal fans are OK but running at full speed

I tried reseting IDRAC/BIOS and everything to default and nothing's helping , Lifecycle inventory is enabled and everytime I boot the server it seems to be running the inventory but does not remove the sensor the non existant fan !

if anyone have ideas I could try... all I want is the sensor for "Fan Ext R" to be "disabled" instead of reading 0RPM

Updated BIOS and IDRAC9 to latest version already too

Thank you , actually I just found the solution ! under the motherboard there was a 0X7C1K GPU Power Supply Module  , I removed the module and server's all good now , very quiet and healthy in IDRAC9

So even without GPU if the module is present it will need external R fan

Thanks for the help !

Hello

thanks for choosing Dell.

As you can see from here

FAN_EXT_R, FAN_EXT_L

You can see that the fan on the back is needed when you plug in a GPU card. Is that the case for you as well?

I think there might have been GPU installed before but there's no GPU installed at the moment, there's only a H330 raid card on pci-e

Is the problem present from a particular event? Or has it always been present since the first server installation?
I recommend that you install the server in minimal configuration, and see if there is the same problem. In this case, I would suspect a problem with the FAN sensor on the motherboard.

I dont really know my client asked me to upgrade their server and was like that when I got it , I wouldnt mind the error if it wasnt the fan blowing at full 100% its very loud

is there a way on IDRAC9 to force manual all fan to 20% speed at all time ?

I can try removing all PCI-E and drive and reset everything again from lifecyle interface with "Repurpose or retire system" and flag everything to default...

Yes try this, and also perform a reset of the motherboard, this is the procedure
