T140 - Storage expansion - new PSU needed?
Hello Folks,
i've got my Hardware yesterday for my unRAID und its awesome.
I have a few questions which i'm not able to solve by myself, i hope you guys can help me out.
(The last time i build a PC by my own was 2004, so i forgott all about connectors and stuff )
Specs:
Intel Xeon E-2236 3.4GHz
64GB ECC Memory
3 x 4TB Dell Storage Drives
1 x 6TB WD Red
2 x 240GB Dell Boss Drive
PERC H330 Raid Controller 8 Ports
Closer look inside: https://i.imgur.com/Be1zIBy.jpg
The system has 4 HDDs installed and connected to the H330, powered from the connector on the Mainboard. I use the H330 only as HDD/SSD controller without RAID because of unRAIDs parity functionality.
Q1
The H330 could easiely handle 4 more HDD/SSD (128 in none RAID), but how can i power the 4 additional HDD/SSDs up?
In the pic you can see there is the connector (P3 black-brown) unused coming out of the Power Supply. I assume it's for some additional GPU.
But could i use it for HDD/SSD Power Supply?
(I guess i will have to buy an other PS to get my HDD/SSDs running.)
Q2
Should i use the H330 with the SFF-8643 or the Mainboard Mini SAS 36P SFF-8087 connector?
whats the pro an con?
Thank you for your help

Q1. 4HDDs max.
https://dell.to/2QZSOZ7
spec sheet : Up to 4 x 3.5” cabled bays
Q2: Hence no extra cable needed

Hi, thanks for answering me.
Bay for 4 HDDs, yes. But the H330 and the Motherboard ist still cabeable to server more than 4 HDDs.
Or is Dell limiting the max HDDs when you buy the setup?
Don't worry about the space, i will have some custom made SSD bay above the HDD bay.

Hi, T140 model chassis supports up to four 3.5-inch cabled SAS or SATA drives. (https://dell.to/2OcGnYP;
I don't know the details of deciding of limitations but They can make such limitations due to the physical compatibility of the chassis and the category difference between the models on the basis of firmware.

Actually, I didn't mean it. What I mean is that for example, not all hard drives work in enterprise products, because on a firmware basis the server does not recognize the disk. It works with the manufacturer's own hard drives' enterprise products that are compatible with that model. Because they are produced by considering criteria such as security and durability in enterprise products.

Hi I'm afraid I don't have the answer since it's not designed to have not more than 4.... Sorry we can't be of help when it comes to customizing.
