Added SATA drive , cannot see from OpenManage.
PowerEdge R510
Adding a single 3TB sata drive.
Added to CADDY, inserted into SERVER. Orange Light started flashing after a minuite. This was the first indication of life.
Cannot see the drive from OpenManage , Enclosure Backplane , Pyhsical Disks.
Any idea what i am missing ?
Thanks for any help, driving me nuts.

The PERC H700 is the only Dell controller that will support larger than 2TB drives, and a firmware update to the latest is required.

sorry that should have been "drive slot sensor, drive fault was asserted" . Its a non-dell sata drive.

"Driver version is out of date" im told.
Dell PERC 6/i Integrated downloaded from http://support.euro.dell.com contains now 64 bit version (windows 2008 64bit OS installed)

Got to be a driver/support issue somewhere surely ?
Would update PERC controller but no 64bit driver available from website.
Its a HITACHI drive.

Also , i have 2 x disks raid 1 , 3 x disks raid 5 and 1 x 500Gb disk with no raid install on the backplanes that are operational.

added the 3TB sata drive to a xp install i had handy, drive was detected (all be it as a 750gb drive which i assume was a xp limitation , lack of enabling large disk support or something) ... but proves drive works.

Thanks : ) all makes sense now. Will chuck a 2 TB drive in instead. Finding it difficult to find online what the maximum HDD support is for the PERC 6/i

If my implication wasn't clear in my previous post, the max size is 2TB for the PERC 6/i (may require a firmware update if very old).
Remember that the PERC's do not support non-RAID, so if you put a single drive in the system, it must be configured as RAID 0.

Hi , back on this again sorry. Grabbed a 1TB drive , plugged in to R510. Drive cannot be seen from OpenManage. Firmware version maybe the source of the issue (Firmware Version 6.2.0-0013) but using my Service Tag another firmware is not avauilble (only perc5 drivers are displayed).
1. where can i find the latest driver for PERC 6/i Integrated ?
2. once i have it how do i install it ?
3. once installed do i use open manage to view / initialise the new HDD ?
Added a 500GB a year or so back to the same box and i am sure it was perfectly intuative.

Latest driver (says PERC 5/E, but "Applies To" lists all supported controllers):

Latest firmware:
www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails
Simply download and run each file to update.
Your 1TB drive should show up in OMSA as Ready (or possibly Foreign)
If not:
You have 2x_GB in RAID 1 , 3x_GB in RAID 5, and 1x500GB in RAID 0, right?
You have the PERC 6/i controller right?
Do you have the 8 or 12 drive backplane?
What drive model are you putting in? Is it "certified" (Dell co-branded for a PowerEdge server)? If not, is it Enterprise-class or just a cheap consumer/desktop drive?

When the drive is insarted the lower light is solid green
lower light then off
upper light then flashes orange
LCD show message as of start of thread , "drive fault was asserted"

the 500GB raid 0 drive added Aug 2010 was the same
(Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM).
Both = samsung
Both = spinpint range
Both = F3 model
Both = sata II
Both = 7200 rpm
Capacity varies
Cache varies

Do you have a free slot to try it in? Does the drive work when you hook it up to another PC?
