Make sure the firmware is up to date on the Perc 5/i controller. Go to this site: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/poweredge-2950 and select your OS, and then go down SAS RAID and select the Perc 5/i firmware update. You will need to power down the server, replace the battery, and then power it back up. Here is a link to the User Guide, page 74-75 will show you how to replace the battery:

To answer your question ... when the battery is no good, the RAID controller turns off write-caching, which can significantly improve performance (or 'decrease' when disabled), so if you value performance at all, then replacing the battery is important (and cheap - around $50).
I've had 2 batteries fail on PE2950 systems, I bought two new batteries and fitted them as per the instructions, but even now after 3 months they are showing as failed, anyone else have the same issue? Latest firmware by the way.
I'm not familiar with "MISCO" ... do you trust them? Do they vouch for or warranty the batteries? Some places do not test - simply ship and hope. Batteries are especially susceptible to age.

Got them from MISCO, ran the SUU on the server to update all bios/drivers and firmware.

Where did you buy them from? Are you sure they were "good"? Did you also update your BIOS and ESM/BMC?
