Best PERC card for T340 RAID10

Hi,

My PowerEdge T340 was fitted with the PERC H330P at the time of purchase. Planning the storage setup, I have come to the conclusion that I would prefer to use RAID 10 with 8 drives, to have both performance and protection.

Before taking that plunge, I want to make sure that I have a controller suitable for the task. 

I know that for RAID 5/6, a controller with cache is a necessity to get a reasonable performance. However, RAID10 is a different animal, and I know several people using HBAs to get good performance in software RAID10.

What is your recommendation? Do I need to replace the H330P with eg a H730P (seems like H740P is not supported - which I think is a bit strange) or would I get similar performance with my current controller?

Below link have detail comparison on various PERC 9 storage controllers. The key difference is H730 have Non-Volatile cache which will improve read/write performance by option to configure read and write policy for virtual disk

Thanks for your reply.

I am aware of the headline hardware differences between the controllers. And, as mentioned, I know there is a major performance difference with regards to RAID with parity like 5+6. But both striping and mirroring are much simpler, and I have seen many implementations of this granting good performance on simple HBAs using software RAID or Intel RAID10. So what I am asking is more in the line of this: Do you have any tests/benchmarks that show the difference one might achieve by spending more on a controller with cache? Not for RAID5, but RAID10.

Second question, although within parenthesis, was why the H740P is not supported on the T340. It is supported on 14th Gen PowerEdge servers (which the T340 is), but apparently only T440 and T640 +rack servers. As these same-gen servers have a lot in common, I fail to see why the T340 should not be supported. Can you clear this up?

Considering that the H330 does not contain cache, the H730p will be a more performance solution for the T340. I don't know why T340 model does not support H740p. I'm leaving a few article links that I think might be useful. However, I have to say that I could not find a benchmark test that can be compared.
