BIOS Issues with PowerEdge 800 Tower

Hello All,

I got a 800 server with 4XSATA HDD.

The system had been cleaned with burn software previously.

I get an error at the bootup. There is no installed OS yet. I have to fix this error first.

The Bios does not see the 4 SATA HDD. It says for all 3 SATA Ports 0 -3  hard disk drive is not found. In the BIOS the SATA Controller is set to ATA MODE.

The cables are connected properly between the board and the hdd. All the LEDs are Green.

I don't have any dell installation disks.

What steps do I need to take to fix this problem? How do I update the BIOS with HDD driver if that is the issue?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated?

JA

All the driver files are here: www.dell.com/.../04

Try re-seating the sata and power connectors on the disks, if there's no change you could try moving the sata connectors to the cerc card and see if the disks appear there.

Try re-setting the nvram using the jumper on the system board. there should be a sticker on the inside of the side cover that describes this.

This sytem was also shipped with a cerc sata6 raid card, pop the side cover off and physically check where the disks are plugged in.

If it's to the system board, check the sata ports are enabled in the bios. They are either on, auto or off.

If they're plugged into a contoller card, then there should be a prompt of ctrl-A during post to enter the raid card bios and managed the disks from there.

Thanks for the reply

The cerc sata6 raid card is not connected to anything.

BIOS Versiob - A03

All 4 disks are individually connected directly onto the system board.

The BIOS has all SATA Port 0 – 3 set to Auto (I only see Auto/Off options – Auto Selected)

I see in the SATA Port 0 – 3 status showing in the BIOS as Unknown Device.

The Integrated Devices has the SATA controller set to ATA Mode

Both IDE Controller and Diskette Controller are set to Auto.

The Boot Sequence does not have a HDD in the list.

I can load a bootable CD if required.

I am new to dell servers and I am not sure what I need to do next.

What could you think the problem might be?

Would I need to install BIOS or drivers?

If so where would I be able to get copies?

What steps would I have to follow to install?

Is there a how to document I can follow to fix the issue?

Thanks for any information you can share.

The re-seating of the connectors seem to have fixed the problem. The HDD are now visible to the BIOS.

What a relief.

I am very grateful for your helpful suggestions.

Thank you.
