Compatible DVD drive for PowerEdge 2650 Server

I am having a similar problem. I installed a TEAC DVD-ROM DV28EV drive in place of the cd-rom so I could install Server 2008. It will read cd's fine, but it will not recognize dvd's. TEAC only has firmware on their site and I have seen no drivers to download on the internet. There is also no place to change it in the bios. anyone know the solution to this?

Has anybody got a PE2650 running W2K8 and if so what DVD drive are you using?

I think the only choice is to buy an external SCSI DVD-ROM (if you can find one) and use a SCSI card with an external port to boot off of. The 2650 doesn't support boot-from-USB, so that's not an option.

When the 2650 shipped there were no DVD drives for any of the Poweredge servers, and as it uses a proprietary connector type, you can't use a generic DVD drop either.

If you can't find a SCSI solution, you could do a PXE boot install, or just install Windows 2003 and then upgrade (network share or copy the files off of the DVD (that you put in your desktop and share out) to the server and install from there).

Obviously, at best you can run the 32-bit version of 2008 as the 2650 doesn't have x64 processors.

The best method for me was to download the CD  ISO "Dell System Build and Update Utility" version 5.5.0. This release has the ability to choose Windows 2008 as the OS to install. When the installation process is done with this CD the process is searching for a USB DVD drive with the Windows 2008 Install DVD. But copying  the content from the DVD to a USB  memory stick and plug this stick in the front usb port also does the trick.

Go to www.velocitytechsolutions.com and search for part number FG219. This is dell part numbered DVD drive and it will install server 2008 in the 2650 with no problem.

I know this is an old thread that is more than likely dead, but for those of you that come across it looking for the same information, Dell originally installed the HLDS GDR-8082N DVD Rom drive in the PE1750's and PE2650's.  It will work in both servers, they just have a different mounting mechanism internally but the physical drive is the same.

The 2650 cannot boot to USB devices.  What OS are you trying to install?

I have the same problem I have to reinstall Windows and it accepts the external DVD drive via USB which is what I can do to fix this problem because it will not let me boot from the external drive can not find the solution, anyone can help me?
