Converting a Replaced HDD using "Convert to RAID Capable Disks"
Hey Guys,
We recently replaced an HDD in a Dell PowerEdge T320 with a non-dell disk since the server is out of warranty, but is still vital to our clients environment. The HDD has come up as "Non-RAID". There is an option to "Convert to RAID Capable Disks". Will doing this allow the HDD to be added back to the existing RAID and will this destroy the currently existing RAID in the process?

Hello,
Converting a disk to RAID capable does nothing to the physical disk, except for flagging it as able to join a RAID volume. You'll want to mark the disk as a hotspare or perform a replace member disk operation after, in order for it to join your current array.

Thank you for the information.
Just want to clarify about Replacing a Member Disk. This can only be used to replace a disk that is currently missing from the RAID and not actually used to add a disk to the RAID correct? I just want to make sure I understand before I do anything with this server.

Yes, that is correct, only for replacing a missing member.
