You'll want to buy the 2nd processor upgrade from Dell so you get the heatsink that you need from Dell. Maybe someone has the partnumber for just the heatsink and you then may be able to find this on Ebay or so from someone else just selling the heatsink.

You definitely want to stay with the Dell heatsink for the T410 either way.

As Dev Mgr said it is recomended you purchase the upgrade kit from Dell so you can ensure you get the correct components that are specifially designed for the T410. The SKU for the E5520 customer kit is 317-2814 and includes the heatsink and is 489.99. I searched online and this doesnt appear to be available online. Dell sales department can be contacted for pricing or you can direct message me your service tag, company name, and contact info including your email address and I can get a quote created for you.

Keep in mind with the T410 you will also need to add memory to the server if a second processor is added. I have inlcluded a couple of links to the user manual. One has the process for installing a processor and the other has the memory guidelines.

Thanks for the reply, I checked the link and it seems very helpfull. I understand what you saying. But the problem is I already bought the cpu, I guess I need to find heatsink for T410. Will contact Dell sales to see if they can sell heat sink seprately

Not a problem. I recomend contacting the Spare Parts Department if you are just needing to purchase the heatsink since it will likely be a refurb part. The part number for that is:F847J. The Spare Parts Department can be reached at 1-800-357-3355, they will be able to assist you in ordering the part.

After calling Dell spare parts department 5 times and wasting 3 hrs , I finally got through and requested a quotation for CPU and heatsink.

CPU which is a dell Xeon processor is aroaun $1150 , I don't understand why it is so over priced and any different to Intel Xeon E5520 processor.

For my precision workstation T7500 Dell didn't sell the risert, heatsink and shroud separately, so I had to buy a "2nd processor kit".

I just ordered the cheapest 2nd processor kit available. It did result in having a useless processor, but Dell seems to charge a whole lot more for a processor than the market does. With their harddrives they have firmwares specifically written to be compatible with their raid controllers, which justifies part of the increased cost on those, but a processor is a processor; there's no reason to charge 50+% more than the market price (some may say you pay for the warranty, but I can't see how the warranty cost on a processor only would be that much).

I finally orderd the Heatsink (F847J) from dell. They didn't say if it was new or refurb one. I also got my Intel E5520 Xeon 2.26 ghz processor. Just cheking even though I don't have dell processor (H505J), I am sure I should be ok to use  my Intel E5520 xeon processor with the dell heatsink.

Also does this heatsink comes with a fan ? or Do i need fan with Dell heatsink at all

The heatsink should work just fine with the processor. The heatsink wont come with a fan, there are no additional fans needed when adding a processor.

The Heatsink arrived today, I am all set to go and install it. Just concernd do I need a thermal solution wih it or I can just place the heat sink on top of processor straight away. All I can see is a heatsink with no fan and it has green label at the bottom  which says  remove it.  I am not sure if I need a thermal soultion with dell heatsink or not ?

Can anyone please advise on it ?

Thermal grease should still be used when installing the processor.

Okay I have Intel Xeon e5520 processor  which came without the thermal solution, so does the passive heat sink from Dell which has no thermal solution as well.

My question is do I really need thermal solution to install processor?

What does thermal solution actually do?

Lastly is it possible to just buy thermal solution separately?

-Yes Thermal grease is a must when installing a processor.

-The thermal grease is going to act as a conductor between the processor and the heatsink to assist the heatsink with drawing heat away from the processor. The thermal grease is used to fill the gap so there is no air which is a bad conductor of heat. Not using thermal grease can overheat the processor and cause permanent damage to the hardware.

-Thermal grease would have come with the service kit if it were purchased, however you should be able to get thermal grease from any local electronics or computer store.

I have just the opposite issue, but instead of starting a new thread titled, "CPU DOWNgrade T410", I'll just ask it here. 

I'm about to order a new T410 with 2 Xeon E5620 processors.  I plan to remove one of the processors (and heat sink) and either build a non-Dell clone machine using it or sell it on Ebay.  (I realized the heat sink may not be useful except on a T410).  My question is:  is there a dummy part that must be inserted in the unused socket in place of the removed processor?  I recall from the very first dual-socket Intel motherboards that such a part was necessary and was shipped with the motherboards.  Maybe it's different, now.  If such a part is needed, is it shipped with the T410 or available from Dell or elsewhere?

Also, if anyone has a need for my extra processor or heat sink, I'd like to know it.  You may contact me privately through the message system of this forum by clicking my name.

Thomas117, I did some research and the T410 does not require a blank if only one CPU is installed in the server.

Thomas117, do keep in mind that the memory controller is in the processor, so when you pull your 2nd processor, you'll need to move the DIMMs nearest to it to the slots next to the remaining processor. This also reduces your maximum memory amount due to being able to use fewer slots.
