Dell Poweredge R540 - Enabling both SSD and HDD
Hi Guys,
Our server as well has both SSD and HDD drives, but we are having trouble enabling both in our server. Currently the SSD is online with our OS installed, but not the HDD. How did you enable both your storage drives for Windows to recognize them both?
Would really appreciate the help as this is my first time deploying a server with both SSD and HDD installed. We are currently using a Dell EMC PowerEdge R540.
Thank you in advance!
Regards,

Really shouldn't be anything to it. Which RAID controller are you using?
You can mix SSD/HDD on the backplane, but you cannot mix them in the same array (I.e. you can't mirror an SSD to an HDD).
You do need to create a Virtual Disk (RAID array) for each set though. Did the drives come with the server? If not, what are the makes/models?

Hi Flash,
First of all thanks for taking the time to check out my issue! Much appreciated.
Yup they're definitely in the same backplane. So does this mean that one RAID Controller can handle only one array? Which means that if I configure RAID for the SSDs it removes the existing connection for the HDDs?
Where do I configure the Virtual Disk (RAID array)? In the BIOS as well?
Yes, it came with the server, because we requested for both SSDs and HDDs, because ideally we wanted the OS to boot from the SSD and the HDDs would be purely for the storage of numerous files we would be migrating from an old server.

You got it wrong..
For sure can a PERC handle different types of RaidGroups with means a set of SSD within a RAIDx and a bunch of HDD within a RAIDy.
Within the 2 RaidGroups you have to create at least a single or more VirtualDisk(s). Each VirtualDisk will be detected as Volume for your OS. So you will get a c: for the OS and a d: for Data which is a very common layout.
The Perc can be configure through the iDRAC or when press SystemSetup during boot. There is no special software needed. You can later install the OpenManage Server Administrator on the OS to adjust the RaidGroups/VirtualDisks and certain PERC options.

Hi if I can interrupt, Joerg is right on this and for the OP, please check out your PERC model first. Have a good one.

If your server have PERC Controller(H345, H740P, H745), you can use iDRAC or PERC HII application to configure RAID. You can get more details on these in below link
Configuring PERC using iDRAC - https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/idrac9-lifecycle-controller-v4.x-series/idrac9_4.00.00.00_ug_new/creating-virtual-disks-using-web-interface?guid=guid-2c63fbad-a620-4d1b-af8d-304282cc7e23&lang=en-us
