Dell T430 RAID Controller Setting for Best Performance
To All,
I have a Dell T430 server that I would like to configure the drive for the maximum performance. This server will run Hyper-V on Windows 2019.
Specs:
1 – SSD 256GB …For OS
7 – SAS 1.2TB …For data
RAID Controller: PERC H730
I will setup the SSD drive in a RAID 0 configuration.
I would like to setup the (7) 1.2TB SAS drives in a RAID 5 configuration.
Questions:
1. Should I setup two Disk Groups? 1 for OS and second for Data?
2. For the OS SSD drive, how should the Virtual Disk be created?
a. Logical Sector Size: 512? … Not sure if this is configurable.
b. Strip Element Size: 64k, 128k, 256k, 512, 1mb
c. Read Policy: No Read Ahead, Read Ahead
d. Default Write Cache: Write Through, Write Back or Force Write Back
e. Disk Cache: Default, Enabled, Disable
f. Default Initialization: No, Fast, Full
3. For the data SAS 1.2TB drive, how should the Virtual Disk be created?
a. Logical Sector Size: 512? Not sure if this is configurable.
b. Strip Element Size: 64k, 128k, 256k, 512, 1mb
c. Read Policy: No Read Ahead, Read Ahead
d. Default Write Cache: Write Through, Write Back or Force Write Back
e. Disk Cache: Default, Enabled, Disable
f. Default Initialization: No, Fast, Full
Thanks All,
John

Ok, just so I'm clear...why do you say not to use RAID 5 anymore? Is there a problem with it in Dell systems?
So for RAID 10, if I have 7 - 1.2t drives how much usable space will be left afterwards? Isn't it half the total?
If I use RAID 6, how much useable data space will be left afterwards?
I will need at least 6tb of data space...
Thanks,
John

Don't use RAID 5; RAID 5 should not be used anymore. User RAID 10 or a RAID 6 if you need more space provided by RAID 10.
1. No. You already have two disk groups, one for the OS and one for data - the RAID 0 and the RAID 10. There is no benefit to splitting/slicing either disk group into multiple VD's.
2. Leave all defaults unless you KNOW the implications of changing them and either have tested/will test or have instructions from some vendor to change the defaults for your specific planned use.
3. Same.

Just do a quick Google search on RAID 5 … the technology is obsolete for today's hard drives. To big of a risk of catastrophic failure, especially with large drives, and the chances increase with each disk in the array. This is NOT a Dell problem, it is a problem with the tech itself - it is just past its usable lifetime.
RAID 10: 3.6TB
RAID 6: 7TB
RAID 10 generally has better performance, but RAID 6 gives you the space you need with the size and number of drives you are using.
