DIMMs should match in geometry

My T610 came with 2x 2GB modules (Hynix, 1Rx8, PC3, 10600R-9-10-A1), one per processor. I purchased 4 more 2GB modules (Crucial 1Rx4, PC3-10600R-9-10-C1) I inserted them into slots A2, A3 and B2, B3 but got the following message:

Unsupported memory configuration. DIMM mismatch across slots detected
The following DIMMS should match in geometry: DIM A1, A2 & A3
The following DIMMS should match in geometry: DIM B1, B2 & B3

According to the manual they should be correctly installed (Optimizer 2-GB shows slot 1, 2, 3). So is the problem with the rank? The manual does not say that the ranks cannot be mixed. So how can I get this working?

Dell says the following "Invalid memory configuration. The specified memory modules do not match in size, number of ranks, or number of data lanes."

However, the size matches (2GB), the rank matches (both are 1R) and the data lines Match (72). The only difference I see is that one has for 4bits/chip (x4) and the other one 8bits/chip (x8) but that should not matter. Or do I get my interpretation of the numbers wrong and/or does the x4/x8 matter, i.e. must it match?

Looked at the specs, the ram should work, but more than once I have ordered ram from Crucial which had  a compatibility issue. I would return it.

I searched google for    hynix, 1Rx8, PC3, 10600R-9-10-A1     ,  plenty of suppliers.
