Embedded Server Management is not present error

We have a PowerEdge 2300 which has been running great for years.  The system was rebooted today and after the memory check we receive the Embedded Server Management is not present message.  I've checked the forum and most reference reinstalling the BIOS and ESM software.  Unfortunately after that message is presented the server hangs - no OS, no F1, no access to system setup, no booting from floppy.

 

Does anyone have any idea on how I can boot from floppy and re-install the BIOS and ESM software? Or any other ideas?

I'd think this is a bit more serious than a firmware update. The 2300 is before my time, but i believe i've seen this error once before on something like a 26x0. The solution was to replace the component where the ESM is located. You can't flash the ESM, if the system doesn't see the ESM as being installed. I doubt flashing the bios will solve the problem either.

This is a very old machine - time will have clouded the memories of those who did work with these machines.

 

Even if the component that's responsible for a firmware error is flashable, there's usually no way to revive it from a flash failure other than replacing it or some kind of factory only technique (be it on board programming via something like JTAG, or replacing the chip holding the firmware).

 

 

You may be able to track down a replacement for the board responsible, but I doubt it is worth it. An approximately 8 year old system is probably going to suffer irreparable hardware failure sooner rather than later - indeed, you may already have more than one component damaged. Parts inventory is near certain to be obsolete.

 

A machine of this specification (dual Pentium II - the maximum speed of the Pentium II was somewhere around 450MHz from memory - I think 450MHz was the initial clock speed of the Pentium III) is easy to virtualise on modern hardware.

 

 

If you need an inexpensive replacement, a T105 (which, even in its basic configuration, has significantly more processing power than your 2300), an Linux distribution like CentOS and VMware Server should provide a way to virtualise what you had running on this machine so that you can migrate the services and data to modern hardware. Of course, you must decide on the appropriate strategies for your usage.
