Graphic Card not working in Dell Power Edge 840 Server

Hello all

I got a Dell PowerEdge 840 Server for free and want to use it as a normal pc at home. Is that possible first? It has Windows 7 installed and works fine, only the graphic card is really bad for videos and so on. Lags in full screen and games doesnt work at all. I bought a new one with a normal PCI slot (I think the PowerEdge doesnt have a PCI-e)

http://www.amazon.de/ATI-Radeon-Grafikkarte-Anschluss-%C3%A4lternen/dp/B007XDTIS2/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1344267004&sr=8-32

I inserted it in one of the free slots and plugged it in. I still have an Image via VGA but the graphical performance didnt increase. I checked the device manager and it says there is a failure at the PCI-PCI bridge. First it says device not working. I delete it and reinstall it and it says Code 12, device has no resources. Please help, I got no Idea, what to do now :(

Cheers!

Correct again theflash, Google is your friend w.r.t. search and i always learn something about Dell products from your posts ;)

The s l o w search is an odd problem i seem to have on the Dell site. I use vodaphone wireless internet which in this location can range from acceptable to very poor but it is usually OK. However, when i sign in to my dell account, the responsiveness of the Dell site (search and forum browsing) just falls away while other sites still load without much delay. Signing out of my Dell account doesn't fix this slow down on the Dell site though shutting down and getting back online usually helps. This makes posting a painful process. The problem occurs on my Dell Optiplex (Win XP), HP Z210 (Win7Pro) and on my Dell T610 (Win7Ultimate) so it's not machines specific. It has me stumped!

Anyway i hope the OP finds some resolution to his desire for improved graphics.

Hey :)

Well I'm still trying my best to get this thing started ^^ I tried several graphic cards and a 128mb zotac worked fine. Till that I had a ATI Radeon that didn't work. I ordered an NVIDIA GForce instead and maybe this is working. My problem is, that after the boot screen its all black (when Windows Startup-Screen should appear). I searched the web and it says I should try the VGA Mode or the safe mode because the resolution is too high or something. I would then install the graphic card drivers in safe mode and set the resolution to the right one.

Big Problem: I dont know how to get into the safe mode or vga mode with the server. Tried F5 and F8 already...didnt help. Any Ideas? Read about a safe mode with low resolution too. That would be right one I think.

Cheers!

Adding to the knowledge base as I had a really hard time finding a solution.

My situation.  Dell Poweredge 840 requiring video card upgrade.

Since it only has a handful of slots (pcie x8 => sas controller; pci => modem/scsi card) the only free slot that I had was a pcie1x slot.

Very hard to find an affordable 1x card.  In addition, didn't know if onboard video can be disabled!

As you all know, the onboard video can't even do video well.  As my office server got replaced; I wanted to convert this old quad-core server for workstation use but really needed to upgrade the video.  Sound can be added

Found that zotac makes a nvidia gt 610 512mb  pcie x1 card.  Sporadic reports of it working on Dell servers.

I purchased it online off tigerdirect.  Installed it and it initially booted into safe video mode in windows server 2003.  It took a REALLY long time to boot with several sporadic beeps to be patient.

Windows driver => update was able to search for and find appropriate nvidia drivers on  it's own.

At the tail end of the driver install; the device manger/installer hung; but I decided to give it a try anyways.  Seems to work perfectly fine.

Now getting full screen accelerated 1080p video in youtube/flash.  Haven't tried gaming yet but scrolling in web pages is much faster as the old 8 mb onboard video.  I'll update if there are problems but so far; very happy with this solution as it gives the server a fresh lease on life as a workstation.

For those looking for a part number; it is

ZOTAC ZT-60605-10L GeForce GT 610 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express x1 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

and I purchased it or ~ $60 + $10 shipping.
