hard drive failure on raid 1 boot drive.

Hi,  

i have a failed hard drive that is part of a raid 1 on the boot virtual disk.  I tried taking the drive offline and it will not go offline.  comes up with an error.  So is the next step to just shut down the server and replace the drive.  or should i try just pulling the drive and rebuilding the raid while its running.
