How to enable Hyper Threading on PowerEdge R620
Hi,
We many "PowerEdge R620" servers used as Database servers.
We are unable to enable Hyper Threading on these servers.
It is enabled in BIOS , CPU supports it , not disabled in boot loader
OS : Suse 11 SP 2 64bit , 3.10.15
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 0 @ 2.90GHz
ark.intel.com/.../Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2690-20M-Cache-2_90-GHz-8_00-GTs-Intel-QPI
dmicode , reports "HTT (Hyper-threading technology)" , but not lscpu

Question
1) How to enable Hyper Threading
2) How to get / set Max Boot or Tubro CPU Speed ( Turbo Boost is enabled in BIOS )
3) How to change match / enable Memory speed what it is capable of

Hi,
For question 1, Try booting to our live image and see if it is enabled there. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/%7B%7Bprod.ImagePath%7D%7D/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=CWF92&fileId=3431135544&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=poweredge-r620&languageCode=EN&categoryId=DI
For question 2, Turbo speed is not configurable, it is a set of speeds that Intel validates.
3400 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
3600 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
3600 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
3800 MHz max turbo 1 active cores
That is the way it is supposed to be, less turbo when more cores are active.
For question 3, how many DIMMs are installed? The system will only operate at 1600Mhz if there are one or two DIMMs per channel.

Working on 1:
For Q2:
Bummer ...
For Q3:
We have 192 GB RAM on this server ( 12 DIMMs )
We want to Memory to operate at 1600 Mhz instead of 1333 Mhz

Are the servers with 6 DIMMs running at 1600 or 1333? Page 42 shows the memory configuration guidelines. http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r620_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
4 or 8 DIMMs per CPU will provide the best performance.

We do have servers with 96 GB RAM ( 6 DIMMs ) so it should be in multiples of 4 to get to 1600 Mhz ?
DImms are in DIMM_A1 .. DIMM_A12

What is the memory mode set to? What slots are they in? With 6 DIMMs per CPU it is probably in advanced ECC mode with three DIMMs per channel, and that won’t work with 1600mhz, you will probably need to add four more DIMMs and have eight per CPU with two per channel.

Thanks for the info (PDF ) .. I guess there is no option for 256 GB for single CPU ...

Not with the DIMMs that you have. 32GB LRDIMMs would allow for 256GB on a single CPU.

Hi,
I booted using DELL image , it is showing HT enabled.
We will see if we can upgrade the current kernel.
Thanks
