As far as I know it is indeed a USB device; in the bios under internal components (or whatever it's called) you'd select to enable the internal USB port. Now you reboot and go back into the bios and under the boot order select the harddrive order and you can now select the SD card (assuming you have one in that slot) to be the first disk. This can accommodate ESXi or XenServer for sure, but maybe also some other hypervisors that don't require a lot of disk space.
Thanks for the quick response! It does sound like it's a USB device in that case. The reason I ask is that we are planning to run ESXi 4.1 on a number of R710s and wondered if we could use an SD card to boot it then disable USB - VMware seem to suggest disabling everything that might cause CPU interrupts. I think we'll still go down the route of booting from SD or an SLC USB stick, not sure which yet though. SLC USB is slightly cheaper than the SD module and card so we might go for USB anyway.
