Local hard drive not visible after RAID configuration change
Hi Everyone,
I hope someone can help us with this. We have a Dell server R515 with iDRAC 6, PERC H700
- We have connected a new 1TB disk, did not make any configurations on the RAID. The disk was visible on the file system, I formatted it and moved data to it.
- After moving the data, I went to the RAID card and reconfigured few disks (without touching the 1TB disk) and after reboot, the 1TB disk is no longer visible.
Currently, in the RAID card, I see 1TB showing as is setting as not configured with status Ready
Based on my research this RAID card, it won't show the disk unless they have been assigned to a VD, only then the disk with change status from Ready to Online.
In newer RAID cards, it has a hard drive pass-through so the system would treat it as a local disk.
My question If I go ahead and set up RAID 0 without initializing the disk, will I lose data on the disk? Otherwise is there a way to set up hard drive pass-through on this modal so I can get my data back.

Hello amlife,
I'm sorry the H700 will not do non-RAID configuration for a drive. H730 was first of high-end controllers by Dell to support non-RAID.
You would need to set it up as a single drive RAID0 to use it. This will wipe out any data on the drive.
Please let me know if this helps

As stated, you would need to configure a single-disk RAID 0 - only VD's are presented to the OS for storage, not individual disks. Chances are the metadata for RAID would over-write the partition information on the disk, rendering the data inaccessible. Hook it up to a non-RAID controller to access the data.
