Optimal memory config
I added some more memory to a couple R710s and both are displaying at boot that they have a non-optimal configuration, although they still run. Below is my current config, is there a way to use these chips so both boxes get 128GB? If I need to buy more/different chips let me know. I thought I was following the R710 memory configuration guides properly, but apparently not.
Server 1 Xeon X5647:
A1: 16GB (1333 mhz)
A2: 16GB (1333 mhz)
A3: 16GB (1333 mhz)
A4: 4GB (1333 mhz)
A5: 4GB (1333 mhz)
A6: 4GB (1333 mhz)
A7: 4GB (1333 mhz)

Hi RustonPaving,
The memory is split into three channels of three DIMMS per channel on each processor, since you have two slots open the channels don’t match.
Slots on each processors
Channel 1: 1,4,7
Channel 2: 2,5,8
Channel 3: 3,6,9
You could either take out the Dimms from slot 7 on each processor or add two more 4GB DIMMs to each processor so it is fully populated.

Thanks for the quick reply, that makes sense. Only aspect I don't understand is I'm pretty sure I can order a server from you with 2 procs and just a couple sticks of memory. How is that configuration valid? You wouldn't have all 3 slots in the channel filled in that situation, either.
I'll pick up some more memory and make the necessary changes, thanks!

You are correct that you can order systems that are not full, empty channels are not used, so as long as the used channels match it won’t give an error. So 1,2,3,4,6,9 dimms per processor are all fine. Our newer servers are also more forgiving with the rules and allow more configurations.
