OS Drive for R720

Hi,

I have a 3.5" R720 server. Is there a way to add a 2.5" SSD drive for the server OS? There is an available SATA connection but not sure where to get the power from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have free slot on the backplane, you can connect the 2.5" SSD hard drive to it using a 3.5inch to 2.5 inch Hard Drive converter. Below are part# of this converter for R720

9W8C4 -  ASSY,BRKT,MET,ADPT,2.5-3.5,V2

Below are the part# of 3.5 inch hard drive carrier where above converter can be connected
F238F - ASSY,CARR,HD,SAS-SATAU,3.5
KG1CH - ASSY,CARR,HD,SAS,3.5
X968D - ASSY,CARR,HD,SATA,3.5

Thank you for your reply, but my goal is to use the 3.5" HDD spaces for storage and have a small SSD for the OS. As I mentioned in my first post, there is an available SATA connector, it's back by the power supplies, but I need to get SATA-type power somehow.

Hello LECNT,

There are 2 SATA connectors near the power supplies, first one is used for SATA DVD-ROM drive or DVD+/-RW drive and the second one for Tape backup unit.

Figure 78. System Board Jumpers and Connectors on page 129:

2        J_SATA_CD        Optical drive SATA connector

3        J_SATA_TBU        Tape backup unit SATA connector

In SATA Setting Screen in BIOS you can check SATA ports:

Ports A, B, C, and D are used for the backplane drives, port E for the optical drive (CD/DVD), and port F for the tape drive. Source: https://dell.to/3FN1QMp p.25
