PE R810 Memory Configuration
I have recently updated the RAM in one of our R810s with 24 8GB Dual ranked DIMMS for a total of 192GB. Per the manual I populated A1-A6, B1-B6, C1-C6, and D1-D6. The server also has two processors. The server boots fine and sees all of the RAM, however before booting into the OS I receive the following message:
"The memory configuration is not optimal.
For more information on valid memory configurations, please see the
Hardware Owner's manual on the technical support website
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the system setup program."
Striking F1 will take you into the OS and it too recognizes all of the RAM.
Again this was a configuration found in the manual. Have I missed a BIOS setting or is this configuration truly not acceptable.
Thanks,

You would lose a small amount due to sparring, but in the current layout with the number of dimms you have. It is the only optimal configuration. You would need to add 8 8gb dimms or lose 8 to go with a non-sparring configuration. At 24 dimms it is the only option.

Dustman,
I take it you have the FlexMem bridges installed. What you will need to do for that layout is to enable Sparring. To do that you would need to access the BIOS (F2) and then under Memory Information please select Redundant memory and then set it to Spare.
Let me know how it goes.

Sounds like you have the memory positioned correctly, but do you have the 2 procs in the 2 middle sockets, and you have the 2 flex memory bridges in the 2 outer most sockets?

Chris H, by enabling the Sparring would I loose some of the available memory presented to the OS?

the heat sinks would be shiny silver and the memory bridges are black.

Thanks for the reply Rey G, unfortunately I am not sure how the CPUs are configured as they are exactly as Dell configured them. Any way to verify outside of removing the heatsink\fan?

Chris, I have the exact same configuration as the original poster (24x8GB sticks in slots A1-A6, B1-B6, C1-C6, and D1-D6), and get the "Memory configuration is not optimal" message. I have tried turning sparing on and leaving it off, but get the message either way. Is there another setting that I am missing?
