PER510 BIOS/FW UPDATE FAILS

Four PER510 servers running ESXi 5.0, all stuck at BIOS version 1.4.0, with equally outdated firmware. Tried every conceivable update method: flash drive, CD/DVD SUU,.OMSA, OME, via UEFI and iDRAC. All attempts result in same error message: 'the package you are trying to apply is not a Dell approved package.' All packages were downloaded from Dell FTP and HTTP sites. Have dedicated one server to OME and have set up two repositories, to no avail. The situation is ridiculous and I am about to recommend that the government refrain from renewing waranty coverage for these things and just move on to another vendor.

Bernard Bene,

Would you download and boot to this media -

THEN

Then from the main menu insert this ISO and then click on FW Update from the menu.

Let me know how it goes

I tried that with the latest OMSA (7.2), with the usual result, i.e. not a Dell authorized update package, but will try this also.

You booted to the BUU and then swapped to the SUU disk at the BUU's menu and then selected update?

Booted to OMSA 7.2, same menu as the BUU, then used the SUU created specifically for the R510 from the OME repository. The result was the non-authorized package error. But I will try swapping these two DVDs also, nothing left to lose but time.

Even got the nice list of updates, contrasted with the current, obsolete versions. Every update failed with the non-authorized package error except for the PERC 6/i firmware. That one succeeded. Apparently Dell managed to authorize that one.

Nice touch, I get a 6 GB image file that won't fit on a regular DVD, so now I must go out and procure douible-layer media ...

We use the DELL Repository Manager to create our own SUU Updates disks.  With it you can specify what you want written to the SUU ISO, either platform or component specific.  That way you will be able to create a CD for just your HW Platform and just the Components selected.

In the past we have had issues with some DUPs released by DELL...  In those cases we needed to select an older variant of the Bundles to get DUPs that would work until DELL sorted the mess out...

Yes, that is what I tried to do in the first place, create a PER510 specific SUU DVD from the OME Repository Manager, with the above described results. Since I was told to stop wasting time on this upgrade task, I will just wait for the DL media.

That is very strange...  I used our DELL RM to create a SUU CD for the PER510 with just the Windows OS(es) and it was only 1.7 GB ?

This was based from the DELL Bundle v462...  and DRM v1.6.0.244.

there is an issue where out of band updates can fail if the idrac fw is prior to v1.85 and the LifeCycle controller fw is prior to 1.5.2, but this should only affect idrac and LC update methods, not the SBUU method.

I have created a bootable iso for you, it was created with RM and is about 890MB, so you will need a DVD disc. I tested this on my R510 here before posting it.

NOTE: during execution, you will see some error messages at a few locations during the execution, those are all benign and can be ignored. This update will probably take at least an hour on your system due to the number of devices that have to be updated. Once the system has been updated to these new versions you should not have anymore issues with the updates.

The iso file will be at to http://dtxdropbox.dell.com

note: these are case sensitive!

the MD5 hash for this iso is 1aee5129113644f1d0eb5d80d704572c

I suggest getting a hash utility like the one I use to confirm the file was downloaded correctly.

here is the link to the hash tool www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/hash.html

if this still fails, I highly suggest contacting tech support as this is not a normal condition.

Booting with the SBUU DVD, followed by updating the system with a DL SUU DVD finally worked, thanks.
