Power Edge R710 RAID controller Battery Failure
Hello,
I have a R710 with PERC H700 which suffered a power module failure and shutdown unexpectedly. I replaced the power module and when I boot up, I see a E1211 battery failure for the RAID controller and it is not detecting the virtual disk created as RAID1 using drives from Bay 0 and 1. Did I just loose all config info for the virtual disk? Can they be recovered?
Thanks,
Sarin

The images finally loaded for me here. You might look to see if 0 and 1 show up under the PD Mgmt section of the PERC tool. Ctrl + N should get you there. If they don't show up, you might reseat them.

Sarinj,
I wouldn't say that for sure yet, it may be a failed controller or maybe backplane. Would you confirm what you see under the Physical Disk page in the controller, is it showing the drives? Also, are you seeing a Foreign Configuration notification?
Lastly, if there is no backup and the data is critical you can also look at taking them to a data recovery company.
Let me know.

Hello and thank you for your reply. This is how it looks like. Am using Dell PowerEdge PERC H700 6Gb/s 512MB SAS RAID Controller R374M XXFVX in this box. I have 6 bays filled with the same type of 4 tb disks. Bay 0 and 1 were used for creating a mirrored (RAID 1) virtual disk. the remaining 4 disks are used to create the virtual disk 1.
Right now I can see only VD1. The other one is missing. Would replacing the battery on the RAID controller bring the data back? Also since the data is mirrored, can I take one disk out and access its data in a different box?
Thank you,
Sarin

Your images aren't loading for me, so I can't comment on questions relating to those, unfortunately.
That being said, I wouldn't expect a battery replacement to make any impact on virtual disk detection. To answer your other question about reading the data in another system, it should be possible, but it isn't a process that we recommend.

is there any chance I can send these images so you can view them?

Tha problem was with a caddy that was not properly set and now the system is back online. However, its now showing a foreign configuration present. If I import the foreign configuration, would it mess up the remaining virtual disk configuration?

I am going to order a new replacement battery for the controller. But if I import the foreign config that should get my system back to normal and won't remove the other virtual disks, right?

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I was able to import the foreign config successfully and got the server booted up and back online. Much appreciated for your help. I am planning to get a battery replacement done immediately.

Hi, it looks like you'll most likely to need to replace batteries. However, do not force write back.
