PowerEdge 2650 Driver issues
I have inherited 5 PowerEdge 2650's in my lab. THese arrived with no docs, no Dell CD's and scrubbed hard drives. I upgraded the BIOS to A21, but even though I upgraded the ESM to A02, the actual ESM versions range from 2.11 to 2.50. Still working on that one, but it's not critical. I installed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (these machines will all have between 6GB and 12GB of RAM). The install (and upgrade to SP2) went smoothly. There are two issues.
Issue 1) the built-in network cards are identified as Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit. THe driver that is loaded is the Microsoft driver, v2.91.0.0, dated 10/1/02. The problem is that even though it is a Gigabit Ethernet card, the only speeds supported by the Microsoft driver are 10Mbps and 100Mbps. So naturally, I download the proper network driver from Dell's website - Broadcom NetXtreme Family Adapter, v12.4.0, A02, for WIndows 2003. When I try to install those drivers I get the message - Wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed. Basically that the 6 year old Microsoft driver is better than the one that Broadcom released last month. I even downloaded (what amounted to be) the same driver from Broadcom's website and got the same results. I uninstalled the network device (from Hardware Device Manager) and both manually installed the driver, as well as let the driver install autmatically at boot up. still took the Microsoft driver. I then downloaded the Open Manage SUU v5.4.1 DVD and tried those utilities. Manuall running the Broadcom NetXtreme Base Drive Dell Update Package, v12.0.0, A01, dated 2/8/08 gave me the message "Update failed to complete, you must reastart your system and try again." Four restarts and attempts later I gave up. I then ran the Broadcom NetXtreme Fmaily of Adapters, NetXtreme II Family of Adapters, v12.0, A01, dated 3/13/08 and got this error "This Update Pakcage is not compatible with any of the devices detected in your ssystem". lastly I ran the automatic update from the suulauncher.exe utility only to get served this error "The update failed to complete; you must restart your system and try again. Update was not applied. Exit code = 1 (Failure)".
I can't think of what to do next. We have Gigabit infrastructure, so only being allowed to use 100Mbps because of a driver issue does not make me happy. Has anyone else been here and know the way out?
Issue 2) there are three unknown devices listed strictly as "PCI Device" (with the yellow question mark). Anybody know what a stock 2650 has that would show up like that? so i can figure out which driver to download and install?

I installed Dell Openmanage but the problem persists. Anyone else have any luck installing the drivers for these 3 pci devices?

Try the backplane driver:
Since you jumped in this thread without any background:
If you are unable to resolve the driver issue, I might recommend you use the installation utility to reinstall.

I installed the backplane drive but no change.
To answer your questions:
-I installed 2003 SBS from the Windows CD.
-I'm using the PERC 3/Di RAID Controller.
-SP2
-I searched OMSA for some mention of the RAID driver/firmer but didn't see anything. Not sure where exactly to find that info.
Please forgive my ingorance. I'm not an IT guy...just trying to keep a very small business running.

Re-run the installation, choose Custom and install the Storage Management portion. Then report what drivers/firmware are being reported as out of date.

No, just OpenManage. Do Modify from Add/Remove Programs or run the original installation file - C:\Openmanage\windows\setup.exe.

Whoo...I was sick to my stomach thinking about reinstalling the OS.
I reinstalled OM. Now I only have two devices without drivers:

In OM, when I click on "Storage" its says No Storage Controllers Detected. Also, I got this message during the installation: Storage Management If you are installing Storage Management on your system for the first time, installation may not be able to detect the firmware or device drivers for any PERC 3/Di controllers on the system. See the "Storage" tab in the Server Administrator graphical user interface (GUI) after installation, for more information.

Reinstalling the OS should not be so bad, unless you have done extensive configuring post-install.
Forgive me if you already posted this information, but ...

Windows Server 2003 SBS. Service Pack 2
I don't know. Someone else did the install quite a while ago and they're no longer here.
Not sure if this is the firmware or not but during startup, it says 2.8-1
BIOS is A21. Not sure how to view the ESM version.

If your firmware is 2.8.1.something, then it can't be too far out of date, since the last two firmware revisions were 2.8.1.6085 and 2.8.1.6098. Your driver version should be 2.8.0.6085. If OMSA is not showing Storage information, then you can get this from Device Manager. ESM is under System>Main System Chassis>Firmware.
How did you install the backplane driver?

I was able to get the firmware updated.
I had actually tried doing that yesterday but it wouldn't install with the incorrect driver.

ESM = 3.38
For the backplane driver, I downloaded the file from the link you sent. Ran the exe which produced two files. Right clicked on OEMSETUP.INF and clicked install.
I went to device manager to check out the RAID controller. It said driver version 5.2.3790.1830. Downloaded and installed 2.8.0.6085. I now have Storage info in OMSA. It says the firmware version is out of date and is showing the driver version as 2.8.0.6076.

I can't say I have any other ideas about them. With all the 2650's I've worked on and installed 2003 and 2008 on, I've never seen this issue. I've only ever heard about it once, and the backplane driver fixed it. Unless the driver or firmware issues kept the device from loading properly during the install and now Windows can't integrate it, I'm just not sure what could be keeping it "unknown". Your best bet might be to download the Server Updates Utility (very large downloads), and run it on the server to see if it can update it. Other than that, reinstalling is all I can think of.

You may need to install chipset drivers and or install open manage via the server assistant CD.
A current open manage subscription would solve that issue.
You can also find these on ebay.
