PowerEdge 400SC Audio driver installation trouble
Hi.... I was able to install the sound driver (SoundMax) fine the first time I installed Windows XP (I used the Windows 200 driver, I assumed it was pretty much the same), but now I am trying to resinstall it after a cleanup, and for some reason, it keeps giving an error message when the driver files are trying to install (after having unzipped) saying "Driver not found.... please reboot the computer..." I also tried downloading the most current driver from the Dell site, 65249.exe, and it does the same thing. Am I missing a simple setting somewhere? The onboard sound did work on this 400sc, 2.26 ghz P4. Thanks!

I got the same error you are getting when I used an older version of the SoundMax installer for the AD1980 chip from intel.com listed under their D875PBZ motherboard (supposedly similar to the 400sc motherboard).

Hmm, wait, are you sure the onboard audio is enabled in the bios/cmos setup? Also, under Device Manager do you see the sound card as an unknown device or under the sound controllers section? If the latter, try deleting it from there and rebooting to get it to redetect? (and don't install any drivers if prompted after reboot.. just run the soundmax installer)

Disable the onboard sound and get a CMI8738 PCI based sound card for $10 and be done with it. XP SP2 supports these out of the box. Prior to sp2 you need to install a driver then update from windows update. The CMI8738 chip is dolby labs and WHQL certified. Its inexpensive and works just fine. Retail versions of the card are about $16 - $60 because they include WINDVD. The Hercules sounde muse is one of these.
