POWEREDGE 4600 Memory Upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade my ram on this server. I currently have 4x256=1gig on the server. server requires pc1600 ecc registered.  I bought two 1gig for an upgrade.  Put it on, did not work, system did not boot.

Looking at my server, It has 2 memory expansion cards.  It has bank A, B, and C on each card.  Each bank has 2 slots.

From what I read, you need to buy 4 memory sticks with the same size configuration to make any upgrade.  The 2 slots on a bank need to be filled with the same memory size on each card, which equals 4.  for instance, 4xgig would give me a 4gig upgrade?  Is this correct?

Also, does anyone know or know where I can find out the maximum amount of ram I can put on this machine?

Opps, adding to this thread.

1. Am I correct on my findings?

2. Do I need to buy another 2 sticks of 1gig pc1600 to make it work?

3.  If I do buy 2 sticks of pc1600 1gig, that'll give me 5gig of total ram.  Does that exceed the maximum that can be put on this server?

According to the Crucial memory advisor (www.crucial.com)
- 12 slots (3 banks of 4)
- maximum of 12GB RAM (12X1GB)
- recommended memory is PC2100 ECC REG

I would agree with you that your current memory (4x256MB) plus you upgrade (4x1GB) will give you a total of 5GB. Sometimes they also require you to put either the smallest or largest memory first. There are only two possible combinations so if one way does not work reverse the order of the modules.

I hope that answers your question. Maybe somebody will answer the one I posted!

Nevermind this post. I found the actual link to the spec sheet for system.  All is good.  here's the link if anyone is interested. It's under the FAQ board.
