PowerEdge 840 Chip Swap
Hello,
I have a Dell PowerEdge 840 with factory original components including Pentium D (3.0GHz) CPU, Perc5i RAID controller, and original SATA drives.
Question: The factory options for this box included Xeon processors from the 3000 and 3200 series. Can a straight chip swap be done on this system from its original Pentium D to one of the aforementioned Xeon chips?
(The Intel site indicates that the Pentium uses a PLGA775 socket while the Xeon uses an LGA775 socket. Info I’ve seen elsewhere on the web suggests
this is not an issue.)
Secondly: Are there known significant issues running Windows Server 2008 R2 on the PowerEdge 840?

This Xeon processor is on the parts compatible list.
2.4GHz, X3220, 2X4M, Intel Xeon Kentsfield -- Dell Part# HP110
Supported Systems
The following systems have added the Intel quad-core processor to their configuration:
• PowerEdge™ 840
• PowerEdge 860 • Dell Precision™ Workstation 390
To determine if a system is compatible with the quad-core processor, look for the new identifier added to the chassis, a roman numeral 2 in the upper right of the front bezel.
Second:
The PE 840 does have supported drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Thank you for the reply. I've ordered a Xeon X3210 and will be giving this a try. I did not note the roman numeral 2 you mentioned on the bezel however. I assume you mean this is behind the plastic bezel, stamped on the actual metal chassis?
I did note that there are Server 2008 R2 drivers listed on the Dell site, so that much looks encouraging.

Was wondering if the chip you ordered worked out for you in that PE840? I have the exact same model, but also can't find the II like on other PowerEdge's so I'm assuming it's not a revision II.
