PowerEdge M1000e and Dell FX2
Hello - I am looking for some process input\ direction into migrating from a PowerEdge M1000e to a Dell FX2.
Our PE 1000e has 3 M610s and 1 M520 blades with VMware 5.0 on each.
We are also moving from a PS4000 to a PS6100x SAN.
I am clear on the SAN migration part (ie. Upgrading the Firmware' etc.) but I am unsure as to how to migrate from 1000e to the FX2?
Once the SAN is migrated from the 4000 to the 6100 would we simply load VMware 5.5 on each of the FX2' 4 Blades and connect the FX2 to the 6100x using iSCSI?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi!
When we add the 6100 to the same Group and Pool to evacuate the Volumes to the new SAN -
1 - Do we need to create Volumes on the 6100 or does the data spanning\ evacuation process recreate the volumes on the new SAN?
2 - Is there any downtime or service interruptions needed when doing the evacuation? Or is it seamless?
Thanks

Hi Donald - Thanks for the reply.
Would I still need to VMotion the VMs from the 4000 to the FX2 if I am enacting the below steps for the SAN migrate prior to migrating from the 1000 to the FX2?
Or should I tackle the 1000 -> FX2 first?
Thanks,
Wire the array into your existing iSCSI network, and (optionally) management network (if you have setup the dedicated management port on the array).
Connect to the array via terminal or use the Remote setup wizard.
Give the new array a name, and configure the eth0 IP address, and add it to the existing group (you will be asked if this is a new group or existing). Note the new PS6100 will required unique IP's for each eth interface you configure.
Once the array is added into your production group, it will be "un-intilized" i.e., no raid policy is configured yet. Now go into the GUI and create a “temp” pool (or create one with the CLI). The temp pool will be used to move the PS6100 array into while the RAID policy is initialized and expanded (reduces performance hit on existing volumes in the production pool). To do this, select the PS6100 member then configure the raid.
As you walk through the RAID setup, select the temp pool, and select “wait until the member storage initialization completes” check box.
Once the RAID is completed (depands, could take an hour or a few hours, to see the status use the CLI member select membername show command to see the operation in progress or in th GUI)
You can now simply move the PS6100 into your production pool. The existing volumes will begin to balance over to the new PS6100 member.
Once the PLB (performance load balancer) has completed balancing the volumes access both arrays, you can now move the 4000 into the temp pool (the time the PLB takes depends on the amount of data and load on the 4000 and can take 24hours to a few days). Removing the 4000 into the temp pool, will vacate all the volumes from the PS5000 to the PS6100.
Once the PS5000 is moved out of production pool, if you plan on doing remote site replication, remove the 4000 from the group.

Hi forgot to add - Do you currently have a switch connecting the M1000E to EQL storage? YES
Thanks,

Hi Donald!
Thanks!
I plan to migrate the PS4000 to the PS6100x.
Once done and the PS4000 is offline I plan to move the 1000E 5.0 VMs to the new FX2 5.5 Hosts.
If I were to add to the FX2\ VMware to the same Datastores, as the 1000E, is it basically just cut and paste of the iSCSI IQNs to the FX2\ VMware then performing the VMotion of all the VMs. Then when done remove the iSCSI IQNs from the 1000E\VMware Datastores?
How do you Enable the CLB?
Thanks,

Hi Donald
RE: IQN - So basically on the new Hosts we would just copy the same set up (IQNs) as on the old Hosts to connect to each Datastore? Then Vmotion the VMs to the new Hosts and proceed to Shutdown the old 1000E? VMotion can be done "live" without the User noticing an impact correct?
Thanks!
