PowerEdge R440 Configuration Inquiry: RAM and PCI-E Functionality with Single CPU
Dear Dell Support,
We are reaching out to seek guidance regarding our Dell PowerEdge R440 server (Service Tag: removed by mod) configuration. Specifically, we have received communication from VMware regarding a potential increase in subscription prices. To manage costs effectively, we are exploring options to optimize our hardware configuration.
One consideration we are evaluating is the possibility of removing CPU 2 and only retaining CPU 1 on the mainboard. While we understand that direct CPU deactivation is not possible through BIOS settings alone, we have learned that we can reduce the number of active cores per CPU.
In light of this, we have a couple of questions:
RAM Configuration with Single CPU:
- We are considering removing CPU 2 and relying solely on CPU 1 for operation.
- Documentation suggests limited RAM access with a single CPU (likely A1-A10 slots).
- I have a few specific questions regarding RAM configuration in this scenario:
- Maximum RAM Capacity: What is the maximum supported RAM capacity for the server with only CPU 1 active?
- Compatibility with 64GB Modules: Can the server utilize 64GB DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM memory modules when using just CPU 1?
- Achieving 512GB RAM: Is it possible to configure the server with only CPU 1 to achieve a total RAM capacity of 512GB? If so, what would be the recommended configuration of memory modules (number and size)?
PCI-E Functionality with Single CPU:
- We currently have two PCI-E slots occupied:
- M.2 Flash storage card
- X520-DA2 2x10GbE SFP Dual Card
- When we remove CPU 2 , the X520-DA2 network card disappears from the list of PCI-E devices displayed in iDRAC.
We would like to maintain functionality for both PCI-E devices while utilizing only a single CPU.
- Is there a solution or configuration option that allows us continued operation of the X520-DA2 network card?
I attached some photos of our cards and Raisers.
We appreciate your assistance and guidance on optimizing our server configuration.
Thank you for your time and support.
Sincerely,
Qmars

Hello,
We can not directly help with configuration. But our community may help with detailed. However I'll try to help in generic.
You can take a look general memory module installation guide pg24-25 Dell EMC PowerEdge R440 Technical Guide
Unfortunately, there is no direct solution to maintain functionality for both PCI-E devices while utilizing only a single CPU. The X520-DA2 network card requires both CPUs for full functionality
Hope that helps!

@DELL-Erman O Many thanks for your reply.
as you mentioned with only CPU 1 I couldn't use both PCIe. So I found another solution and use the LOM slot. I ordered the "Dell Broadcom 57416 Dual Port 10 Gigabit SFP+ Network Lom Mezz Card" and I connect it to the white slot blow the PCIe slot 1.
Both cards works perfect with CPU1.
thanks again
