PowerEdge T410 Memory Upgrade Questions.

  • I have a T410 currently with a single Xeon CPU E5640. The second processor slot is empty.
  • I'm running VMWare ESXi 6.x with several Windows Server 2012 VM's
  • I have 3 Samsung 4gb 2r8 PC3l 1060R in memory slots (dual ranked, 1066 Mhz) in A1, A2, A3.

With this motherboard, there are three memory channels,

  • 0 which uses A1 and A4 together
  • 1 which uses A2
  • 2 which uses A3

I want to upgrade memory, preferably without replacing existing chips. I've read a half a dozen posts and haven't found a definitive answer. The hardware guide states these rules:

  • Except for memory channels that are unused, all populated memory channels must have identical configurations.
  • In a dual-processor configuration, the memory configuration for each processor must be identical.
  • Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed within a memory channel (for example, 2-GB and 4-GB), but all populated channels must have identical configurations. This applies to only channel 0.

Questions:

  1. Can I put an 8G dual ranked chip in the empty slot A4 for a net of 20gb? That would mean channel 0 = 12gb, channels 1 and 2 would be 4gb each.
  2. Can I move a 4gb chip from A3 to A4 and put an 8GB chip in A3? Channel 0 = 8GB, Channel 1 = 4GB, Channel 3 = 8GB
  3. Is there a configuration where I can add a single 16gb chip?
  4. In the future, I would like to add a second processor, I understand that the A and B configurations have to match, what is my best options for more memory, reusing what I have now and will purchase for the current memory only upgrade?

Hello

Questions:

Here is a simplified version of the guidelines:

All DIMMs within a branch must be identical. The branches are {1,2,3} and {4}.

The T410 supports flexible memory configurations, so there are many unsupported populations that will work. The most optimal configuration will be if all memory is identical.

Thanks
