Preparing to move Power Edge 700 - precautions?

I'm getting ready to use a commercial mover to transport a Power Edge 700. What precautions should I take before putting it in a cardboard box, which will be put in a moving van, so the data and hard drive aren't trashed in transit? (I'm doing this to help a friend with limited technical skills; mine aren't a whole lot better.) Thanks so much!

One word:  backup.

You should always have a backup - period - but especially when planning any type of upgrade, migration, move, etc. where the chance of unknown/known risks affecting the server's health increase.

Some other things to consider:

  • You should pack the server in something that will reduce vibration/impact
  • You could pack (or carry) the hard drive(s) separately to ensure their handling (although you should be comfortable working inside a computer and familiar with the server model hardware and storage/RAID processes for troubleshooting and recovering from issues)
  • Hire a moving company trained/experienced in moving IT equipment
