problem accessing ERA on PE2650, error "remote console is not available"

dear all,

I have PE2650 with 2 2GHz processor, 1 GB memory and 5 73 GB Hdd configured with RAID 5.

Recently I reformat my hdd coz I want to reinstall the OS using Novell 6.

I tried to install the OS using ERA but I encountered problem. I can see the POST period using ERA. I also can follow the initial installation process but when I was at 50% of file copying process, I got this error "remote console is not available". After that, I can only connect to ERA when I restarted the server.

I know that when the server screen switch into graphic mode I will loose the remote console screen, but the server screen was still the same (there was still 50% of file copying process to go).

I can also ping (and got the reply) the ERA IP address when I got the error message. so I guess no problem with the LAN.

one other thing, the installation process was still running when I checked the server, so it's not freeze or anything.

so, could someone tell me why I got this error message ?

thx in advance for all the help

Two things to check.... your SUN java version on your web client connecting to the ERA, and the firmware version of the DRAC.  Older DRAC firmwares stunk for stability, and the version of your Sun Java client really makes an impact on your ability to use the DRAC.  Those would be the first two places I would look.

Same issue. I can see the console redirect during the POST screen but as the the graphical Windows 2003 startup logo is about to display I lose the display then I get the same error message.

Upgraded ERA card to v3.12 and the ESM was already the latest rev we I tried to update that too.

Also insured my JVM was the latest version and have tried with both Firefox and IE browsers.

Now yours sounds like a different issue.  The DRAC should lose video console when switching into graphics mode, by design.  Then, once the OS is finished booting, and all services start, you should regain remote video console.  However, this REQUIRES that you have the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator components loaded, and that they loaded all appropriate drivers and services for the DRAC remote console in GUI mode.

So, what version of OMSA do you have installed?  When you connect to OMSA (https://servername:1311) and go into "remote access" does it see the DRAC card?

You're right, I have not installed all the components. I set up the server a while ago and for some reason only installed the Array Manager.

I am a bit more familiar with HP's Remote Access offering (iLo) so I hadn't thought that the Server Administrator was needed for DRAC.

Unfortunately it is in DRACIII.  DRAC3 is way behind HP's Riblo/ilo stuff.

The good news is, DRAC4 is coming out in the 8G servers from Dell, and looks very promising.

I will be building a lot of servers over our network. Does anyone know what the minimum components I need to install to get ERA functional in Windows?

The Systems Management CD is over 500MB and I don't want to copy over and install components unnecessarily.

You *need* all of systems administrator.  Download the *current* OMSA package from Dell's website. (1.8)

It is only 194MB.  This will give you what you need for each server.... because you need the Server Administrator services to monitor and alert on hardware health and status, the Storage Management to configure, monitor, and alert on disk related issues, and this also installs managment for the network, DRAC, etc....

Everything you need.  And you really need it all to correctly manage Dell Windows servers.

Hi all,
I've spent the day looking at this with the same results and none of the suggestions working, however, I think I've stumbled on the answer!
We had 8 systems, some of which I could log onto using Remote Access control and others I couldn't. After examining the differences, I found that under the ones that worked, under the Device Manager, there was a modem called RAC PPP Connection using RACPORT whereas the others had no modem installed. Scanning for plug and play devices made no difference on the ones that didn't have it, so after hunting a bit longer I found the following article:
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/solutions/establishing_%20PPP_connection.doc
In here, it tells you to run the following line from the command prompt:
Installppp.exe c:\winnt\inf\mdmhayse.inf PNPC031
The installppp.exe file can be found in the %ProgramFiles%\Dell\OpenManage\rac\MN folder and you actually need to run this command from the above directory in a command prompt as there is a typo:
Installppp.exe c:\winnt\inf\mdmhayes.inf PNPC031
Once this was finished, the modem then appeared in my Device Manager list and all the options for the server reset where there and the console redirect function then worked as well!
I hope someone finds this useful!
Cheers, Antony
