R720 iDRAC upgrade continues to rollback

Hello,

I've been doing a bunch of reading, but haven't found a cause or solution yet for the odd behavior I'm seeing.

Story:

I encountered a BIOS POST message about a DIMM that might be going bad in an R720. I powered down, flea drained, and replaced the DIMM with a spare. Powered the R720 chassis on but it was slow to POST. I eventually powered it off, flea drain, and swapped the old DIMM back in. It was still awful slow to POST and the iDRAC at some point had stopped responding to pings. I ended up in the BIOS eventually to find that the iDRAC had been disabled on the iDRAC Enterprise dedicated NIC and the network settings wiped (as best I recall). I reconfigured the settings, but got a web browser SSL/TLS error.

I used an old browser to enable me to connect and troubleshoot - as it turns out the iDRAC7 which was at firmware version 2.65.65 had for some reason reverted to 1.56.55 (this was confirmed with the Life Cycle Controller at 2.65.65). I worked to step up through upgrades and have the iDRAC at 2.50.50. I cannot get the iDRAC to upgrade into 2.52.52 or later without auto-rolling back. The new version is listed in the rollback page so it was loaded.

What I've tried:

  • uploading the firmimg.d7 files directly from the iDRAC web interface
  • warm reset of the iDRAC from its web interface
  • flea drain the power

Based on the auto-rollback that seems to be occurring I have not yet tried placing the firmimg.d7 on an SD card.

Questions:

  • Why would the iDRAC spontaneously revert to an old version?
  • Why won't the iDRAC upgrade past 2.50.50?
  • What are some next steps I can try?

Thank you for the assistance!

Hello, could you DM with your service tag?

Also I'm thinking you may need to try this.

The license might have been reset.

@DELL-Young E

I go to your profile and try to click on the Private Messages hyperlink, but it just takes me back to the main Community landing page. I don't have an envelope icon (for messages) along the top near the bell icon (and I am not opted out of DMs).

Recieved.

Have you purchased iDRAC7 EXPRESS Enterprise version? It doesn't seem that way.

If you have, please raise an official ticket through this, to fix this. https://dell.to/4cOYZo2

Disclaimer: I have not contacted Dell Support at the link @DELL-Young E linked to.

There is still a valid iDRAC7 Enterprise license listed.

In the logs, there are messages saying the iDRAC successfully upgraded. However after that there is a message about the firmware watchdog triggering a reboot. The new version is installed in the other firmware "slot" so it appears to have successfully written.

I have tried to tell the iDRAC to "rollback" to the slot with the new version, but it continues to rollback to the old version. The upgrade or rollback attempts take about twice as long as a reboot which makes sense since the iDRAC is likely performing two reboots.

To recap, the iDRAC is at 2.50.50 and will not update to 2.52.52 (or later) and stay there.

Hi,

Do you have a screenshot of the mentioned new version installed on firmware 'slot'?

The service tag that was provided to YoungAh, showed that the server has only iDRAC express, did you purchase the Enterprise license later after the server's order?

Have you tried upgrading the iDRAC using the 2.65.65.65 version instead?

Hello @DELL-Joey C ,

I'll certainly share screenshots.
I have redacted some information in the screenshots so I can post them on this thread. (If for some reason you need a non-redacted version, ping me via a DM. Thank you.)

I believe I've tried 2.65.65, but not recently as I didn't want to risk jumping too many versions and bricking the iDRAC.

Thank you.
