R740: Predictive failure reported for Disk 9 in Backplane 1

Hi

I am new to the DELL R740.

The IDrac log showed the error below:

Predictive failure reported for Disk 9 in Backplane 1 of RAID Controller in Slot 6

Which disk will be it be? Disk 9 / Slot 6

Looking at the front view: to you start counting from 1,2 3>16 or 0,1,2,3>16

Can this disk be replaced as hot-swappable or must be it be varied offline?

Can I vary it offline via the idrag gui?

Thank you in advance

Hello LearnerABCZ,

I was looking at your numbering. Do you only have nine drives or is 0-8 just where you stopped numbering?

Be sure to go in the DRAC and Blink the drive that shows Pred Fail=Yes.

Hello LearnerABCZ

The numbering you have on the top of the image is correct

The ninth disk is PD08

Do this in the iDRAC to Blink the drive so you can identify it at the server

Storage > Overview > Physical Disks > Status

Select or deselect individual component LEDs

https://dell.to/3yanjh7

You can use OMSA or the Controller BIOS to do these following tasks if it is still online.

If it is not still online then you can just pull it and replace. Run a consistency check once the rebuild is completed.

When we have a predictive fail drive that is still an online member of the array, there are 2 things that should be done before pulling and replacing: Using OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) or the controller BIOS.

1.Consistency check:

In OMSA: Expand Storage>expand controller. Select ‘Virtual Disk’. Choose ‘Check Consistency’ from dropdown and Execute.

2.When completed consistency check then Put drive offline before replacing:

In OMSA: Expand Storage>expand controller>expand connector>enclosure>select physical disks (or array disks). Select the drop down next to hard drive , choose offline and execute.

The rebuild should start automatically once the drive is replaced.  If it does not then you can use OMSA or PERC BIOS to set the replacement drive as a hot spare that will make the rebuild begin.

Dear Dell-Charles R, thank you for the reply message, appreciated!

I will check the drive status "online/offline" on Monday.

This is still a new installed server - no data on drive/s.

Just to understand: I have a few Qs - sorry for asking.

1. If the drive is still in an online state in iDrac (OMSA not yet installed)>it must first be varied offline before pulling it to replace the drive.

Q - While the drive/s is in an "online" state is not hot-swappable, it must first be varied offline?

Q - If it is already in an offline state - you can remove it?

Q - Can the same drive be re-seated? It must be varied offline first as well?

Q - So the drive is not hot-swappable until it is offline?

Q - If the HDD is relaced (whether it was online/offline) - it will rebuilt? any further steps needed, apart from checking .e.g.: disk size, firmware version, etc.

Q - Will a firmware re-install (same version) or -/update - help with the error message before replacing the HDD?

Apologies for the Q's

Regards

Hi,

Unsure of your server and PERC model, I am unable to determine the correct user guide to set the disk to RAID. Here's PERC H330 guide to navigate to convert RAID capable: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-rc-h330/perc9ugpublication/converting-physical-disks-to-raid-capable-disk?guid=guid-b97ab106-3e88-4292-a196-43d6cf3e121c&lang=en-us
