RAM Upgrade Recommendations for R620
Hi,
I've got a dual processor R620 server with 8x 8 GB RAM modules giving a total of 64 GB. I now want to upgrade the memory and have seen that the best module to buy (GB/cost) is the 16 GB part.
Can someone tell me what options I have?
Can I keep the existing 8 GB modules in the server and add in additional 16 GB modules? If so, what combinations can I add?
For example, can I only add 4x 16GB, 8x 16GB 12x 16GB or can I get away with other combinations?

The answer would be based on the amount of processors installed. In populating the server the guidelines you need to adhere to, and make sure the new dimms aren't violating is; 1) you can't mix Rdimms and Udimms, so ensure that they are the same. 2) is that when populating you must make sure the channels match. 3) The larger dimms must be 1st in the channels. So hypothetically if you were to have 2 processors, 24 dimms (8 16GB and 16 8GB). You can place the 16GB dimms in the slots with the white tabs and then the 8GB in the green and black lots. Giving you 256GB, I am not certain the amount of memory you wish to go to, so I am just giving examples. You could also do a smaller configuration of 8 16GB in the white tabs and 8 8GB dimms in the black slots.

Thanks for your reply.
I have three R620 servers and they all have two processors so if I'm understanding you correctly, as each server currently has eight 8GB modules (64GB per server) the four channel architecture will require me to upgrade by adding four more modules per processor per server (eight modules per server) so I'll need a total of twenty four modules whether those modules are 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB parts.
To confirm then, the architecture adding twelve or sixteen modules across the three servers is not an option - I need twenty four modules.

That would be correct. You can technically run without going in sets of four but you are going to be losing quad channel memory support which will drop your memory bandwidth, it will probably also complain that your memory isn't in an optimal state through post.

Thanks - it does sound like 24x 16GB modules are my best option then though 12x 16GB would work OK.

Thanks - what's really needed is an online memory upgrade simulator which would show what the options are and what to expect with the various combinations.
The only other question I have is what happens when I wish to upgrade further? Let's say each of my servers now has 8x 8GB and 8x 16GB, I assume the next logical upgrade is to fit a further 8x 16GB modules (I'd have to move the 8GB parts to the last slots though) or I could upgrade to just 8x 8GB modules giving a total of 320GB or 256GB respectively unless by then the 32GB modules then offer the best price per GB.

Hope you dont mind me bumping this old thread but I'm having issues adding an extra 12 x 16GB dual rank chips to my R620 with 8 x 8Gb.
Moved the 8Gb chips to last slots in each bank.
iDRAC does not see the extra RAM installed. OS does see the full 256Gb.
Any thoughts?
